NavCanada Application

Hey all,

I just applied to NavCanada. I passed the initial online exam. They say next step is for me to get an invite for an in person session if I qualified.

Can anyone give me an idea on the whole process from here on in, and how long it is taking applicants to get to the offer stage.

Any tips can help.

There's probably 10 threads with the pertinent information in them if you search the forum a bit.

Depending on where you apply (demand is different in different areas of the country) and how well you score on the tests and interviews the process from initial application to course offer can take anywhere from 9 months to 2 years.

There's a thread titled something like 'Application Samples' that has a few posts of people sharing their exact application times.

The steps are as follows:

-Online exam. There used to be a personality test as well. I hear that's not there any more.

- In-Person Assessment. This is a 5ish hour exam consisting of 4 or 5 different exams, all but 2 are multiple choice.

- Phone Interview. You have a phone interview with a retired controller who asks you fairly basic questions about aviation and personality.

- In Person Interview. You go to the ACC or Tower or where ever FSS do theirs and meet with the Manager of Training, a senior controller and usually a supervisor of some kind and they ask you more questions about yourself and why you think you'll make a good controller.

After all this is done you'll be placed in a pool of candidates for a course offer. You may never be offered a course. Depends on demand and your scores.

While that's certainly within the realm of possibility, I think there's an effort in place to try to streamline the application process and only hold testing sessions when there is a need for courses.

I know for me anyway the time from initial application to course offer was only four months or so.

Indeed there is a concerted effort to make this process shorter (I was only 9 months from initial application to course offer) but I felt it still needs to be pointed out that it could be much longer than that.

I have heard that they are definitely trying to speed things up. That being said, my entire application from initial to offer was over 3.5 years...

All things being equal and assuming there are courses to fill

The higher you score through the entire application process the faster you get an offer...

It really depends,

For me, initial application to getting streamed IFR took me only 4 months. And now I have been waiting for a course offer for 13 months.

5 more months and I will have to re-apply.

I had only 2 months left before I got my offer! Although now there are some medical concerns that may hold me up, kinda wish I did the medical before.

I received my training offer for YYZ IFR yesterday after only 6 months since my registration on the Take Charge website but it all depends on how many classes they have a year and where you're ranked in the pool.

There are many topics on here that can give you a good idea of a realistic timeline.

My initial application was around December 2015, now I am placed in a course training offer in oct. and good luck
