Hi folks,

Im planning a road trip targeting mainly 703 and maybe some 704 operators. I'm wondering what's the most appropriate attire for such an occasion? I'll be spending much time in cars and airplanes, so the more casual (comfortable) I can be, the better.

I think I can help.
The basics are to remember you are a Canadian , and thus must show respect for everyone and everything , and offend absolutely no one. You did not mention if you were male, female, or an associated subspecies, but it does not matter , as it is all about respect.

Head. Either a hijab , or a headress of feathers. The hijab is the preference particularily if you are a man, as it demonstrates both respect for a culture and gender...never, never a ball cap. That is strictly for white folks and rappers. The rappers don't want wannabbees and you must never try to be associated with white folks. They are on the no hire list, and don't even qualify tor airport security.
The headress will immediately identify you as respecting traditional aboriginal culture. Everyone wore them in Canada years ago. I think it was in the treaties that the govt would provide funds for them.
For the upper body, a rainbow coloured tank top, unless you are in Toronto or Ottawa. Then , it apparently is more politically appropriate to go shirtless . I am not entirely sure about this, but I take it,when the prime minister does it, it is the correct thing to do.
Skin tight shorts, flip flops , and your done. Unless you are going for the bush jobs, then work boots.(..two left ones if you are going to Alberta. )

There are so many young pilots who complain that a road trip was wasted. Why? Inappropriate attire.
So your coming on a social website to ask is a wise decision indeed. Common sense could totally have you dressed inappropriately. Follow these words of wisdom, and I guarantee people will respond to your presence. I look forward to sharing the cockpit with you some day...

Must be nice to be able to look down on people all the time. I don't think the OP deserved this kind of ridicule. I guess people just forget what it was like at the beginning of their career.

For most:
702-703 bush ops in most cases jeans and work boots are fine
703 non-bush ops business casual
704 Business casual is usually fine, but some places a tie may be more suitable

Research the places you are going, see what kind of flying and clientele they cater too and the most important thing is to present your self professionally and confidently (not cocky).

There are numerous threads on road trips, read them through as there are some excellent tips.

Thanks for the tips! I have a tie dye t-shirt.....if I rip the sleeves off it will make a nice tank-top. How about matching it with some cut off jean shorts and a nice pair of Crocs? I considered a hijab, but I thought potential employers might be more impressed by my awesome mullet which I've been growing for a few years.

Where do you work? Sounds like a place where I'd fit right in and be very happy. See you in the cockpit!

Thank you. I've reviewed all the posts I could find on this topic and am feeling fairly well prepared. I'm also 15 years into my career and have had many scheduled meetings with CP's etc, but no random drop ins such as this.
Do you think it's ever acceptable to wear a clean, plain ball cap when dressing business casual? Only asking because my hair is wild and very difficult to manage while travelling. (think mad scientist)

after all these years I am both experienced and type rated on the HH series.
Our SMS folks have done a thorough risk analysis and it is reflected pro actively in the company SOPs.
Transport Canada has also made it extremely safer by imposing 465 new regulations specifically to High Horse ops and the specific training required for emergency descents in the case of catastophic balance failure. I follow the H.U.M.P.T.Y. Fall checklist religiously.

And in addition to all that, my mom made me promise to always wear a helmet and parachute when conducting HH ops.

So Cbn 77 your comments are right out of line. But in the spirit of the millinium generation, I will recommend you for a thread participation ribbon so you will not have your feelings hurt.

Look at what their pilots wear: if they do, sure. Usually business casual and ball cap don't really go together though....

Don't wear a ball cap. It may not look bad to some, but why risk it?

Get a hair cut if you think your hair is that bad.

I am not convinced that a black tie is good advice.
In the career path of today's generation, the first two years spent on the ramp honing their pilot skills and proving they have the required IQ to be a pilot will never have them checking oil...good grief, would you trust a new CPL with the responsability of securing an oil cap? I am fairly certain that even if that is not specifically prohibited in the CARs, no company SOP would allow it. Providing, of course, that dipstick was not a management reference.
And no self respecting new CPL ever plans to check the oil anyway. That is for the piston engine crowd. The jet folks they plan to join have people to do that.

But the tie, itself, is not such a bad idea. I do think that one should make the effort to find a rainbow coloured one. Demonstrates the true Canadianist attitude exemplified by our Prime Minister, and if you suffer from a birthal related handicap, it makes the apology for being a white hetrosexual male at your interviews, much more believable.

Besides the fact that I liked Kennedy , the OP is already playing it smart by self identifying as a killer ergo a visible minority. I expect that will almost shoot him to near the top of the hiring pool.he , she, or it probably can play that card more effectively than needing to wear a tie..
