8 pilots
5 are OTS New Hire
Q400 for all YUL, YYC, YVR
Jazz had an entire new hire class cancelled just as Covid hit, plus a pool of candidates waiting for a course at the the same time. Does this mean that only 8 out of that group were interested in coming?

Pilots from cancelled courses were offered first opportunity. Same at AC for the May 18 PIT class which includes 17 Jazz pilots.

There are lots of other good jobs out there if your ultimate ambition is not AC via Jazz. Also, if 2020 job offered pilots did not fly at all during COVID, offers were suspended pending the pilot getting current.

Do you know the OTS pilots' experience? around 3500 flight hours?

Can we expect Q400 spots in YVR and YYC for 2022 or at least until the bid equipment?

I got an offer for June 6 ground school. Just under 2000 hours and ATPL.

All 8 had ATPLs I believe.

Jazz is posting an early equipment bid before Monday May 23.

Results should be out end of June.

If posted May 23, closing date no sooner than June 07. Results within 15 days. Review period further 15 days.

Should see results no later than June 22 with potential corrections no later than July 07.

Vacancies:

YYZ 380
YUL 71
YVR 27
YYC 3

After the bid runs there will be secondary vacancies so exact base availability will vary, but weighting towards YYZ is obvious.

Why such an increase in YYZ? Will Jazz be flying more routes on behalf of AC out of YYZ? Will they start new routes (and bring back some of the old ones that were active before the pandemic?)

481  The downstream ripple as the flight schools and 703 operators get hollowed out is going to be brutal

The numbers posted above are not increases, but simply vacancies based on a combination of growth and forecast attrition to AC. 327 Jazz pilots are forecast to leave for AC over the next 12 months. Total Jazz system pilot positions are only nominally increasing over the previous equipment bid.

All Jazz/Express flying is a function of AC commercial schedule. The answer as to whether YYZ Express flying will be increasing is self evident. It is also a function of some reductions in planned staffing at other bases where those bases had pairings that covered YYZ flying and involved significant deadheading to/from base.

What this is intended to illustrate is that for the vast majority of Jazz new-hires over the next 12 months - you will be starting in a YYZ based position and it will be more of a challenge to change base.

Those captain vacancies are mind blowing... Can we expect a lot of 703/704 people to make the jump directly from a King Air to a left seat Q?

I'm wondering how much Jazz' training department and procedures are ready to accommodate those kind of candidates.

Since I’m flying the King Air, does that qualify me to fly the Queen of the skies?

There are 226 CA vacancies. Most if not all will be filled internally.

If Jazz goes down the DEC path, it is entirely likely that a candidate would have to already have 705 command time. 703/704 won’t cut it.

Best bet for anybody who wants left seat at Jazz to come sooner rather than later. Seniority trumps all (if you have an ATPL).

Interesting.
Perhaps not in the instant. Pretty obvious that YYC is a shrinking base. For that matter, so is YVR.

Everybody who applies/accepts a new-hire course should be aware of what they are signing up for. Much like AC, YYZ based positions comprise a significant number of the total positions at Jazz. Almost 50%.

And if you end up on the EMB, it is YYZ/YUL only.

Hey Rudder,

Given you’re clearly quite knowledgeable on the movement that is forecasted to be happening, seeing the numbers with the bid most new hire spots will almost certainly be YYZ. How long do you think it would take someone in the June 6 course to be awarded YUL, if initially awarded YYZ?

Unfortunately, that is crystal ball stuff.

The good news is all 3 equipment types have a YUL base so you can show YUL as first choice on your standing bid if you don’t hold it on new-hire course award.

With the forecast upgrade and attrition rate, I would not expect that you will have to wait too long.

It will be very interesting to see how this bid plays out. That's an awful lot of training, especially when you throw in a bunch of direct entry captains....
