UREA?

Post by MikeGolfEcho »

Afternoon all,
just looking at some NOTAMs and came across the following:

000000 CYBL POWELL RIVER
CYPW RSC 09/27 60 PCT BARE AND WET, 40 PCT WET ICE. UREA. 1701101520
CYPW CRFI 09/27 0C .50 1701101520

After some Googling I found UREA is some kind of runway treatment, presumably for the snow and ice. Is it just what it says it is? Actual urea? I have an image of a bunch of people spraying pi$$ out of a truck all over the runway.

Can someone educate me on what it is and how it's used/applied?

Thanks all!

MGE.

Urea is a white solid pellets of which are spread for ground deicing airside instead of road salt which accelerates corrosion of aluminium and should be kept away from airframes. Urea is about ten times the price of salt though.

I'm familiar with urea as a agricultural fertilizer. It was often mixed with other ingredients to make the required blend. We also sold it straight and it would be used as a deicer. It was by far the lightest weight per volume of the fertilizers. Once a poor chap forgot to cover the open-top spreader and half the load blew out by time he got to his farm.

It can also be mixed with diesel fuel to make a high power explosive.

Urea fertilizer (46-0-0) is different from Amonium Nitrate (34-0-0), which I believe you are alluding to. The explosive ANFO is comprised of Amonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil (diesel). I don't think that buying urea in large quantities gets you on the FBI watchlist...
