Cell Phone Adapter?

Post by Boundary Layer »

Anyone know where I can find an adapter for my headset that can plug in a cell phone/cd player?

There are a few online that I can find, but most run $100.00 +, which is a bit much for me.

Any help would be nice!

I have seen used ones sell on ebay from time to time. Usually the brand "SafetyCell". Sportys.com sells one for $99.... But If you are looking at buying a brand new one expect to pay $100+.

Boundary:

The problem isn't that tough to solve and won't rrequire that you spend a $100 or more so buck up ... all is not lost. You have conflicting requirements between the cell and the CD player. An adapter should be able to be soldered up by your avionics guy super-quick for a the cost of a six-pack. You will need one for each application as the cellphone will use a different size plug than the CD player.

If you want some Rube Goldberg setup where you listen to ATC, listen to the CD player, and talk on the cellphone at the same time, you will be up against a lot of work.

You just need a "splitter" to go from 1/8" stereo male plug to 1/4" female jack for the CD player. Radio Shack sell these adapters for about $8.

If the avionics guy is of no help, just go to your local radio/TV repair shop and explain what you want....likely be a max of $25 for him to make one for you.

An even cheaper solution is to just wear the ear buds under your David Clarks and adjust the ratio of CD volume to ATC so you are still easily able to hear ATC over the background music. Just the same as listening to the ADF on the broadcast band while flying.

Note ... to state the obvious, hoppin' & boppin' to the Crocodile Rock during the morning rush at YYZ and missing a dozen radio calls isn't a good idea.

Time for me to Duck the Fog for awhile
