How much information will TC give out to potential employers about you?
I've always been very honest in job applications I'm wondering if perhaps being TOO honest can hurt your employment chances. Hiring at major companies is more and more done by HR personnel these days and less so by pilots. There is also usually some kind of point system. So offering up information about some minor incident or no fault CADORS that you think won't hurt your chances if any other pilot heard it may in fact cost you dearly in points with HR since their form is probably a black and white one. At the same time I don't want to be considered a liar for not volunteering information either. So what, if anything, will Transport Canada give out about your record if probed by a company?

I don't think TC can disclose your personal details - unless it's in the public record like an accident report or investigation. It seems it would violate privacy laws.
Don't lie, but don't sweat not disclosing on your resume that time you got the taxi clearance wrong and the cadors you had for turning right instead of left and busting your altitude...
If they ask you in the interview "any accidents or violations" you can handle it then honestly... a mistake or a cadors is not a violation... misjudging and sinking a wheel off the taxi in the mud trying to make a tight turn is not an accident - no matter how stupid you felt and how pissed your boss was - if TC has sanctioned you or you had an accident that's another thing, be honest...

Is there some legislation that binds them to privacy? It seems sensible that they would be but the CARS dont say much about it.

Probably the Privacy Act (Canada).cgzro wrote:Is there some legislation that binds them to privacy? It seems sensible that they would be but the CARS dont say much about it.

"Personal information under the control of a government institution shall not, without the consent of the individual to whom it relates, be used by the institution except
(a) for the purpose for which the information was obtained or compiled by the institution or for a use consistent with that purpose; or"
So if the information is related to your alleged unsafe operation of an aircraft it would appear it legally can be released under 7(a). Of course that would not be nice but it appears legal

(Unfortunately in some cases) They will only tell if a person has a valid licence and if you have any enforcement actions in the last two years.
Yes, I've seen excellent people rejected for hiring by major companies while a lying scumbag jerk that I wouldn't trust to push a baby carriage gets his shot at the dream job while good people are left behind .... that's the real world I guess, and if you're thinking there is justice, reward for hard work, attitude, and study, or equity in the process, you're in the wrong business.

I know of one medium sized 704 that asks in the interview if the candidate has ever failed a written or flight test. I always wondered if they were able to verify the answer.
