Just curious if in general other folks are flying with their logbooks.

Because it is the only document you own that is bigger and heavier than that abortion of a pilots license?

No. Not legally required, and if the worst happened I still have some record of my flying.

So; when Transport Canada Ramp Checks you; how do you prove "Currency"?

If you are carrying passengers, and cannot prove the required number of takeoffs/landings etc, you could be in a world of hurt.

CAR's requires you to be able to prove "Currency".

If you are flying in another country and are Ramp Checked, the problem is ten times worse!

Why would you not carry it? I just tend to keep it in my flight bag in case I need it (for a checkout/training signature or whatever). I don't see any disadvantage to carrying it. If I crash and burn I'll have much bigger worries than having to tell TC my logbook is toast.

99% of my flying is in one plane, as documented in the journey log.

Seriously? Then why would you need to carry around the av doc/license when all you need is a silly log book that shows you did a ppc and currency? Tell TC to sod off when it comes for renewal, tell em your logbook is up to date, that's all they need to know. Let me know how that goes.

It never fails to amaze me the level of fear of being ramp checked by TC there is in Canada.

Obviously a lot of you people have no clue as to what power TC has over you on a ramp check.

You should maybe become familiar with your legal rights under law and that fear will disappear.

And for sure you should know what type records are legal as far as logging time in a personal log entails.

I haven't kept a personal log book for about thirty years.

My license booklet has the PPC date in it. That proves I'm current.

I carry mine in my flight bag, not because of any fear of getting ramp checked (never thought about currency checks even), but I just find it conenient to have my flying related stuff in one place. After my flight I pull out my plastic folder that has the journey log for my plane as well as my personal logbook, fill them out, and put them away. I suppose I could leave my log at home in the same place I keep my maintenance logs but then I have to remember to get it and fill it out when I get home, and I'm lazy. This is from a PPL with low hours who generally flies one airplane though, and I can see good reasons to not cart it around if you're flying for a living.

If you own the plane, would the journey log tell TC if you were current?

I usually carry my logbook with me. It makes it easier to keep the logbook up to date. I have a digital backup.

There's no ambiguity, you are required to keep a log (401.08), and TC can certainly force you to show it to them (under the Aeronautics Act itself), but they have to give you a reasonable length of time to provide it.

Curiously, there's no penalty available to TC if you don't keep a log though.

And the requirement you have to meet is "recency" not "currency".

No I do not carry my pilot log book with me.
1) It is too valuable to me personally (historically).
2) I require it for job interviews
3) There is no legal requirement to carry it.
4) I am north of sixty and have been ramp checked many times in over 10 countries (including Canada) and have never been requested to provide my personnal log book nor am I legally required to. As Cat said " know your rights". By the way, the French SAFA give the most thorough ramp checks.

When I was a student, I used to carry it, along with everything else with me. Eventually I slowly started leaving it in the car when flying or else at home. Now I just leave it at home for the most part, or in the car if i need it for any administrative reasons. I have an online logbook accessible from any browser, so if I REALLY need it for whatever reason, I just need access to the internet.

How can you show currency with a log book that is not certified. For any inspector to prove you are current he would need to xcheck all data. Likely why they don't require you to carry one. I have not maintained a log book since about 1974 but having said that all my flying is on record at the company I fly for at any given time. My license has all the require data and it requires a company audit to confirm that my night and IFR is up to date. I also have only had to produce a log book on 2 occasions in my life. Once to get my ATP and once for a job very early on in my career. All jobs I have had since about 1974 I have never produced a log book. It seems aircraft endorsements trump the need for a log book and now I'm past needing to care  and yes a recreational pilot I am not.

Question for all: When was the last time you were ramp checked?

I haven't kept a personal logbook for 17 years. My company has all the records.
Ramp checked last fall in KPHL.
