Yea Boeing made the 787 as an upgrade to the 777 and Airbus had nothing so they took off A330 and painted an A350 on the side to show they are creative too
No really though I like the A330 and the A350 looks nice too, this news has been out for about a year, dont know of any North American orders (apparently its not doing too well) and I think Qatar Airways has the most orders for them (60 orders). We'll hopefully see some in Canada soon (most likely not with a canadian carrier)

1. The Boeing 787 was designed as a 767 and 757 replacement, and as a competitor to the highly successful Airbus A330-200.
2. The Airbus A350 is a major update to the Airbus A330-200. The A350 features a new cabin, new wings, new engines, a new tailplane, new landing gear and many new systems. It builds on the technologies developed for A380, such as composite materials. 39% of the A350 will use composite materials while aluminum-lithium parts will comprise 23% of the aircraft; steel, 14%; aluminum, 11%; titanium, 9% and various other materials, the balance. The fuselage is planned to be built primarily with advanced aluminum-lithium alloys. The extensive use of composite and Al-Li will lead to 8,000 kg (17,600 lb) of weight reduction. The A350 will also utilize bleed-air versions of the Rolls-Royce Trent 1700 and General Electric GEnx engines developed for the 787.
3. Launch customer for the A350 is Air Europa, with 10 A350-800's. Qatar Airways, ALAFCO, GECAS, Kingfisher Airlines, TAM, and CIT Group have all placed firm orders. The newly merged US Airways (a Star Alliance Partner) is expected to place a order 20, especially after Airbus financed the airline.

there will be a lot more plastic in the 787 than the 350 which is using more Lithium-Aluminium alloys.
Airbus have muttered about how Boeing advocates can keep bringing up the AA tail falling off but what's going to happen when ramp trucks bash the side of a 787 fuselage - how do you repair that kind of damage on a baked plastic section? On 787-800/900s on long sectors it's less of a problem but on 762 replacement 787-300 doing transcontinental shuttles the higher cycle count gives more ground impact likelihood.
The 350 retains the 300/330 external width but will be slightly wider internally due to a thinner but proportionately stronger fuselage - apparently. The 300/330 were designed for commonality with containers which 767s could carry fewer of. It also moves crew rest due to a smaller avionics section to provide more seats than an equivalent length 330.

You're wrong dude... Airbus makes fine aircraft! I don't know squat about the A350, but I've diddled with every type they've made so far since the A300 and their lemons are no more numerous than Boeing's.
They each have both strong and weak points.... good and not-so-good designs... The one thing Airbus did sooner and better than Boeing was to adapt, innovate and, where needed, even immitate. Boeing was stuck in their own design rut for too long, though thankfully, they too learned they needed to make changes to compete. Even that was thanks to Airbus.

Airbus make nice aircraft but from what I have been told, their flight manuals no longer have the word "pilot" in them and the person flying is the "operator" They no longer build a cockpit for the pilot but the computer instead so I hope they go broke on the 380.
A350 is the trying to steal B777's market place, it just has a lot less metal and more fiberglass, build one with a normal controls and I will be sold.

The thing about the Airbus side-stick controller is that it makes the Airbus jets one smart piece of metal. On the A320, there are 7 computers running the FBW on the jet, and they all make decisions regarding the inputs into the plane. On an Airbus (except the A300 and A310) when you move the stick, the computers interpret pilot deflection to mean "oh, you want the plane to change direction by x degrees per second in the roll and pitch axes". The computers then move the surfaces to give you that desired change in direction rate (unless said desires are beyond what is allowed by flight envelope protection). This is regardless of outside (the cockpit) factors such as airspeed. But, and this is a very important point, the Airbus system does not "replace the pilot". The pilot is still very much in charge of what happens, unless he or she does something stupid like try to break the plane of course. Flight envelope protection can be somewhat compared to stability systems in some modern cars. If you try to drive your four wheel drive Mercedes through a turn on a gravel road too quickly, the stability systems will intervene to ensure you have maximum grip. Until you get to that point ("the point of stupidity"), the Mercedes will let you do what you want. In otherwords, for the more newer Airbus jets, you can pretty much tell the jet to do anything you want (including doing a barrel roll like a fighter), until you come up against the performance and safety evelopes of the jet. Airbus jets are one smart piece of metal (or composite).

well i guess it gets to the point that the computer says "ohh, you want to turn at that angle of bank or degrees per second" it also now says "ohh, you want to land?" it will say "ohh, you wanna leave to cockpit because I don't need to here" is not far behind.
Boeing at least makes the plane pilot friendly unlike the 380 which will have some serious 'mode-awarness' issues. Driving a mercedes at least they still have a steering wheel, you feel like you are in control, not a game controller on the side of your car while trying to off-road.

2. In essence, a pilot's job is now to sit there, and monitor the airplane, and make essential decisions. They are involved only in the landing and take off parts of the flight.
3. I had a chance to step into a Airbus A320 simulator, and to tell you, the side-stick controller is very intuitive. Left hand on side-stick, right hand on throttle. There was a lot of control and feedback from the side-stick, and it felt comfortable, even though I am right handed. A few automakers are also testing side-stick controllers, and from what I heard, it may take a few hours to get used to the side-stick, but otherwise, it is comfortable and is intuiative.
