It seems to me there are three options in
Springbank YBW.

• Calgary flying club
• Springbank Air Training College
• Mountroyal University (Full CPL + degree program only)

Then if you drive a bit further.

• Calgary Flight Center - Located at Olds Didsbury
• Skywings Aviation - Red Deer industrial airport

Did I miss any? Is there a school in Lethbridge anymore, that is pretty far.

Do Skywings not still have a base in High River? Did they ever get a new CFI there? Their website only lists Sherry as the CFI, although it's pretty out of date (still talking about 172s being based at Okotoks).

Someone bought the hanger in High River and raised the rent. Unfortunate for me because that was where I was going for my yearly hour of dual.

I'm most likely going back to the Calgary Flying Club. I have never had a bad experience there but, I will have to buy a membership so that's probably $150+ per year. Not looking forward to paying for .4 of an hour being number eleven for take off.

It looks like they still have the Merlin registered. Their website appears to be defunct, but I'm pretty sure I saw an article by Wayne in a recent COPA magazine, so I think they're still operating.

The Merlin is quite spacious as far as I remember. Not sure about the W+B...it's max gross is 1230lb, and according to their website it typically has a 789lb empty weight.

If one was to make this the "southern alberta flight training thread, you could include SuperT in Medicine Hat, and Excel in Lethbridge, the latter of which has a Piper based fleet for those looking to try something different.

There is also of course Cu Nim, if you don't like engines on your flying machine.

Does FlyRight still operate in Springbank (with Doris as CFI)? If so, that might be a better option than CFC although I definitely understand not wanting to train out of Springbank.

For some interesting training you could also try contacting Jim Hrymack in Bassano. I believe he does tailwheel/aerobatic training on a Citabria and a Harvard. I'm not sure if he's around right now though, last time I tried to get a hold of him he was out of country training fighter pilots in a hot, sandy country.

I went to Prairie College Mission Aviation in Three Hills (1 hour out of Calgary). They offer PPL, CPL, multi, multi IFR, taildragger, mountain, complex, and aerobatic training with an emphasis on mission aviation.

Aircraft include Cessna 172, Citabria 7GCBC/7ECA, Cessna 182RG, and Seneca 2 Piper.
