Sunwing hiring update

Post by JoeyBarton »

Good evening folks,

Any update on the hiring forecast? Heard they are conducting a oct GS, is there anything planned for later on this year?

Sunwing hired 42 during April and May. Two classes of 10 out of 49 to be hired this fall are going through training right now. So 29 more applicants to be hired and to start training soon. We received a recent memo stating we will have non-stop hiring in the next 12 to 24 months.

Good Luck!!

Any carrier that has early start/late start long duty days will be affected by the proposed FTDT rules likely to come in to effect early in 2019.

SW and all other affected carriers will have 2018 to get staffed up. I heard that SW estimated a 17% impact on crew efficiency.

Looks like we’re joining the race to find pilots. Should be around 100.

Good news you might get a WJ number and as a new hire you’ll get called for overtime first. A world first!

Is there an updated pay scale? The latest I can find only goes up to 2019.

Minimum annual guarantee is 900 hours (down from 1000 hours in CBA 3).

You'll note there's some pay freezes from Year 1-2 on the Captain side and at the top end of the scale for both Captains and F/O's. There are some funky LOU's that deal with this issue that are too long to explain here.

WestJet and Encore use a five digit number. 1xxxx, 2xxxx, 3xxxx. They are used for all WestJet and Encore employees, including pilots, flight attendants, CSAs, and other staff.

Swoop uses a six digit number starting with 8. 8xxxxx. I am unsure if they are shared with other Swoop employees.

I believe he’s jokingly alluding to how WJ would love to slot the sunwing guys under the swoop LOU

Not only that, Westjet manline isn't hiring. But Swoop is desperate to hire non Encore pilots as quickly as possible before Encore pilots wake up and do something about it. Sunwing traditionally goes from 30 tails, down to 7 in the summer, yet they force recalled all of their pilots who were working elsewhere to do what? Are deployments happening? Maybe Westjet is recalling Sunwing pilots so they can give them pink ties, and pay them pink wages?

Any updates on how the pilots will fit in into the list when the merger happens? I see SW is hiring. Is it worth it for a pilot to go to SW now without much knowledge of what the future holds for the pilot group? I guess for a new hire, it's not as critical as a senior SW pilot. I'm a bit out of touch with the merger.

Bumpity bump bump...

And...is that payscale still valid? If I'm reading it right: 900h (minimum annual) x $61.61 = $55449/yr. perdiems? base allowance? negotiable start level? Anything to make that salary higher than the Navajo pay I made back in 2002?

Negotiable start rate?: No. Payscales are as per the CBA.
Base allowance?: No.
Perdiems: I got about $700 per month doing multi-day trips. If you do single-day turns and receive crew meals, I don't believe you get perdiems at all.

Should you interview with Sunwing, be sure you ask the interviewers where they see themselves in five years. They are mostly likely going to ask you this but I think the question is just as notable when reversed in this case. Hopefully they are honest with you.

Dumb question….IMO
The honest answer everyone should give no matter what airline they’re interviewing at should be “who knows”.
5 years ago nobody would have thought Canadian aviation would have been effectively shutdown…..
