The High and the Mighty

Post by oldtimer »

Long before I became a pilot, I saw an old John Wayne thriller called The High and the Mighty. A movie based on a part of the book Fate is the Hunter by E K Gann. I read the book recently and it was a facinating story. I read where it was being re-released this year. Has anyone seen it anywhere and/or know where I can get a copy?

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Hi Oldtimer.

They have been running it on AMC classic movies down here, but in a very limited fashion. Amazon.com has it:

It was a great movie, a personal fav that fostered in modern CRM as we know it today:

That John Wayne slapping around is a good one. As an ex-cop, I could really relate, when they showed it in my CRM course last year. Our poor training pilot (who knows my past of course) just turned white and blurted: “oh my God, you don’t want to show him that!” Got a good chuckle out of that one..

hi oldtimer,

The High and the Mighty is actually a separate book from Fate is the Hunter. Both classics, and I would recommend anything else by Ernest Gann, Island in the Sky is awesome, Aviator, In the Company of Eagles...how can you resist a title like that?!

You should be able to find the movie on dvd, and any of the books on Amazon, but for books in general I would highly recommend this site: http://www.abebooks.com

cheers.

Gann is an amazing author.

The high and the mighty as you mentioned is it's own book, which is fiction, unlike some of Gann's other books. It is however loosely based on EKG's experiences flying between Hawaii and the mainland in DC6's years ago, which he speaks of in Fate.

He has written dozens of book, which are almost all excellent. Some are about aviation, some aren't.

My favourites are.....
Fate is the Hunter
High and the Mighty
Soldier of Fortune
In the Company of Eagles.

'The High and The Mighty' and 'Island in the Sky' were released on DVD quite recently. Try HMV, they had them last time I was there.

Thanx guys. I reread the book and it was facinating. E.K.Gann was a very creative writer. Isaw the movie so many years ago, I did not quite appreciate the story line till I gained flying experience and read "Fate Is The Hunter".

Don't, whatever you do, spend any hard earned cash on the movie version of "Fate Is The Hunter" starring Rod Taylor. It is so putrid that Ernie Gann disavowed any connection to it, and had his name removed from the credits.
