A Southwest Airlines flight landed safely in Philadelphia Tuesday after the jet violently depressurized when a piece of the jet's engine flew into and broke a window, a passenger's father told NBC10.

The father, Todd Baur, said that a female passenger was partially sucked out of the plane.

Given the position of the window in relation to the seat, it's not unfathomable that she could have very well been belted in and still been partially sucked out the window. Remember Speedbird 5390?

This just goes to show how a simple blade separation still caused this much damage/injury. Can easily take out some hydraulics too if parts flew in the wrong direction.

If you are referring to National Airlines Flight 27 then the body was found about 2 years after the incident by construction crews. It took some time after that to identify and link the skeleton back to the incident.

I'm still fascinated how the Captain survived the Speedbird 5390 incident.

Thanks for the update. Didn't know that. Heard the Speedbird captain passed away recently. The Speed bird incident was caused by improper maintenance on the windows(nots or bolt sizes I believe). The National Airlines pilots were playing around with CB's to do at the time for the engine guages when the engine oversped. Best not to play with CB's when they can be attached to multiple systems, some of which are not necessarily made known to the pilots. And another reason to keep the seat belt on reasonably firmly while seated. I believe loose seat belts have played a role in the severity these incidents.

I don't know if anyone has listened to the ATC audio. I can't help but notice the speed and pitch of the Captains voice change as the tapes play. Sounds almost hypoxic at the beginning despite hearing what sounds like the O2 masks in the background. Definitely seems more "normal" when on with Philly approach.

I think both the pilots and Philly APP did a fantastic job handling a difficult situation in very busy airspace to boot. Controller was everything one could ask for.
