Cozy Mk IV

Hey guys,

Anyone have any expierence building or flying a Cozy? I think there’s one or two builders kicking around Southern Ontario. It’s been on my radar for years but I’ve never met anyone who’s flown or built one.

A buddy is building one here in Alberta. I believe his main communication resource is the Canard Zone. https://www.canardzone.com/forums/ The online presence of the whole canard movement is huge, the Canard Zone is probably a good launching point.

Again, just in case you don't yet know, there's a process to build an airplane in Canada. It's not onerous at all, but you have to follow it or you'll never be able to register and fly your plane. http://www.md-ra.com/en/

I flew a Cozy mkIV a few years ago. It's an interesting aircraft. Quite fast for 180hp (fixed pitch in this case). I also did some work it (I am an AME).

If you look on the market, there are many non completed kits... Resale value also appears to be quite low... might be better to buy one already flying.

One of the main caveats I found with the aircraft is seating flying with two people up front. According to weight and balance data, the aircraft should be able to fly with 400lbs total in the front seats. When I flew, we were at that weight and on final approach, at 95 kts, with the stick almost full back the aircraft is still descending. At about 100 kts the wing generates enough lift to re-establish normal flight but the difference with a lighter load up front is huge... So while it's a 4 seater, it certainly has restrictions (for the front seats). Also, consider the aircraft needs decent length runways and would be inappropriate for gravel or grass strip.

It would make a great cross country machine..

My project is a Wittman Tailwind W-10. (not hard to tell ;^) My hope is to have it flying by next summer, 'gonna be a busy winter to get it done.
