Glasses and Medical

Post by Me2005 »

I have a glasses and my dioptry is now -4 and -4.5. I think it is lot...
I am afraid thet Air Canada and Jazz could refuse me because of that.
What is maximum (or minimun) dioptry to be accepted to the Airlines?
If I do a laser surgery how long time I will lose my medical?

Thank you

me2005,

I did my AC medical in 1998 and I had the same worries as you as I have near sightedness also.
Years ago you would be out of luck.....but what I was told by the AC doctor when I did my medical is that if you meet the Transport Canada medical standard for vision (20/20 corrected I believe, maybe a little less) you will pas the AC medical.
You can thank the guys who got turned down because of the vision thing ,sued AC for unfair discrimination and won. They cannot be stricter than TC although they do check for more things on the medical than TC does.

So I believe you will be fine.As for the laser correction I can tel you that I personally know 3 AC pilots who had it done (although prior to AC ) and got in......not sure about the waiting period though

I am not the best source of information but I will tell you what I heard:

I called once to Air Canada to ask them about their vision requirement and they told me they have the same than TC. Then, I called TC and they told me that even if there's a miimum written (3.0 dioptry), TC will give you the medical if your vision can be corrected to 100% with glasses.

Read RAC 424.04, (c) Substandard Vision in One Eye at http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... htm#424_04
Also, take a loof at http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... t42402.htm
lokk the article 1.5 b):
b) the applicant possesses a visual acuity without correction in each eye separately, not less than 6/60 (20/200) and the refractive error falls within the range of ± 3.0 diopters (equivalent spherical error);
(amended 2003/06/01)

I know a captain who's working at Air Canada and he is below these standard.

For the surgery, I heard 6 months without flying... call TC, they will know!

Yes, you do hold a Cat 1 but do you have HIV? Are you a drug addict or Alchoholic. How is your cholesterol? Perhaps the 2 packs a day are starting to add up. Maybe you just started doing your medicals bi-annually and have the waist size to match. If they are going to invest in you long term they want to make sure it's not for disability.

When you go for your medical at AC or Jazz, they will give you a form that needs to be filled out by an opthamologist (not optometrist) if your prescription is greater than +/-3. It's not a problem but there is still a transport regulation in writing somewhere saying it should be +/-3. As long as your eyes are healthy, the opthamologist will give you the okay.
