Will I get my RAIC?

Post by afterburner101 »

Will be applying for my RAIC soon as I step into regional flying.

5 years ago I was involved in an incident with the police. I was in a vehicle with my friends and we were stopped by the police. I obtained a copy of the police report and the summary is as follows: We were all "under arrest" for suspicion of drugs. Upon searching, one individual was arrested and charged with possession SMALL QUANTITY of marijuana and another controlled substance. Me and the others were searched and no drugs were found on us (written specifically on the report), no charges were laid against us. No involvement with organized crime or trafficking. This is the only thing that taints my record.

Anyone have similar expereince? Were you able to obtain your RAIC? Do you think I will have trouble obtaining my RAIC?

NOTE - I've read up (cases, news articles, and forums) on the crazy batshit that TC have been doing. It seems that Brenda Hensler-Hobbs (the lady that was involved in the series of revocation, including the somalian girl that got her RAIC revoked because her dad drove her car to a gang-member funeral) is no long involved with TC security clearance...

I hate to say .. but I think you will definitely have an issue. The passage of time might play into your favour, but TC believes that anyone caught with illegal drugs (marijuana was still illegal) is automatically involved with organized crime. How else do drugs get trafficked? That’s going to be the case against you.

Good luck.

No record, you're fine. Was it a local police dept?
The stories you hear have a lot of other factors surrounding them. Not saying it's fair for the people who had their raics pulled, but the common thread is that they were all under scrutiny at the time as cops were actively investigating related people. On the radar so to speak.
So unless the guy who got charged is a currently a repeat offender who still has ongoing issues with police, you being a "known associate" has no consequence.

DanWEC .. People need to get this through there heads .. Record or no record .. it doesn't matter! You don't have to be arrested! They can pull your RAIC or whatever reason they see fit. Its not right to have a RAIC .. they will remind you of that.

Being a "known associate" has a great consequence to applicant of a RAIC.

Seriously guys .. you need to educate yourselves.

A couple cases:
1) Applicant's boyfriend goes into house. Drug bust happens. Applicant sitting in boyfriends car, arrested and released. Boyfriend charged with possession. Denied RAIC.
2) Applicants ex husband found to associate with biker gang. RAIC denied.

It's not fair but that's the way it is.

So what are you going to do about it? What direction would your education take?

Cncpc .. educate yourself on the process, be informed so you don’t end up in a potential career ending situation. If you know what your up against you’ll make a better informed decision.

Like Bede said .. it’s not fair, and it’s not! .. but if we know, we can avoid SOME of the pitfalls ..

Would Air Canada, Jazz etc hire without an RAIC? Would RAIC rejection completely end career?

The airlines will not hire you without the ability to get a RAIC but I believe you will be fine.

Its not like you sent a series of rambling death threats to various government and private sector entities. That gentleman lost his RAIC without having been charged or convicted of a crime:

It is a condition of employment for the companies you mention.

If you cannot obtain a RAIC, you will not be employed by these companies.

Generally reads something like this:

"Ability to obtain a Canadian Air Transportation Security Authority (CATSA) Restricted Area Identity card (RAIC). RAIC may be obtained during initial training, but must be valid no later than the completion of Initial Ground School"

Not having a RAIC won't end a career but it will limit one's options.

Be truthful and respectful during the application process. If they don't ask, don't tell.

Go and apply and find out if they give you one.

I don't understand why people keep coming on here asking if they're going to get one, there is only one way to find out.

You can't just "get" one. You need to be employed by an employer who requires one before you can even apply.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

You are correct, I am very familiar with the process. My whole point was for anyone worried about it, they won't know until they go, get a job that requires one and then apply.

There may be some companies that are hard on the ability to get a pass but you can still get employment without it. Just maybe not driving a bus for an airline, who wants to do that nowadays anyway ;)

Also, you should always mind the company you keep and don't get arrested.

Don't worry, I know a thing or two about various jurisdictions' databases and their methods of information sharing. You're correct, a record doesn't make or break, but there are other factors.

I'll agree that the cases I made mention of, and the ones also quoted by Bede likely constitute charter violations and are infuriatingly unfair, with no recourse- but they were active investigations at the time using federal resources.

If there isn't anything more to the posters situation, there doesn't seem to be anything that would show or be of consequence in a search by Transport... again unless the friend is still in trouble.

The criteria certainly isn't black and white though when it comes to things that do show up... timing is important.
