Hello,
I recently decided to follow my dreams of becoming a pilot and therefore I am looking for the best school possible that will allow me to find a job right after..
My top two options are either Lachute Aviation or Air Richelieu, I have visited both. I'm thinking of doing an AEC
Air Richelieu
- 85 000$
- Jazz partnership
- Probably the most famous school in Quebec
- Good simulators, takes 20-24 months to finish
- At the St-Hubert airport
Lachute aviation
- 55 000$
- You finish in 12 months
- No partnerships
- Instructor rating for 7 000$ more
- Have their own airport so no waiting time

Re: Best flight school near Montreal?
Hi bgn9,
Congrats on your first steps to becoming a pilot. There are a few factors that you may wish to take into consideration when choosing a flight school in the Montreal area. I will also include my personal recommendations. First, this is often an overlooked aspect, but what language would you like to have your instruction conducted in. While most flight schools won't turn you away, there are some that would have a shortage of instructors that can speak English/French. Secondly, the amount of time you want to spend in traffic. 3) Do you want to be part of the Quebec flying ecosystem?
So, if your intent is to conduct your flight training in English I can recommend the following schools 1) Laurentide Aviation- it is well situated on the west island, it is much less expensive than the St Hubert Schools, it has a relaxed club-like atmosphere and the new management is excellent. You may, however, find that there are instructor shortages. 2) Cornwall Aviation- A bit of a trek down the 20/401, but well worth the travel. It is a family owned business with great customer service, reliable airplanes and can take you from ppl-Cpl-Mifr for a better price than any school in Mtl. They have in house flight test examiners and have a number of good instructors. The only caveat I can add is that they don't teach ground school in house and you would have to take it a pilottraining.ca. Finally, Lachute aviation is a good school from what I hear. Be cautious about completing an AEC. If aviation is what you wish to do and you want to complete a college program I would recommend you look at Seneca, Western, Windsor and invest in an academic program outside of Quebec. You will find, outside of Quebec, an AEC holds little weight and can be a costly investment for little benefit; further, you also must complete the curriculum as prescribed by the ministry of education which can(and does) put additional pressures on both instructors and students. Be warned.
If you are able/want to complete flight training in French I would recommend the following. 1) Aviation par ALM, the sister school to Laurentide. Located in Beloeil, the school has great instructors and is much more reasonably priced than the St Hubert Schools. 2) Air Richelieu, while you probably get good flight training at Air Richelieu you will pay for it. The school has nice simulators, a doctor on site which is handy, the pricing is, in my humble opinion, too high. 3) Lachute, if you want to conduct training at Lachute, do yourself a favour and live off the island in Lachute. The traffic commuting north on the 13/15 is hell and you will be spending a significant amount of time commuting. So, there you have it. My recommendations on schools in the Montreal Area. if you have any more questions feel free to send me a PM.
Cheers and good luck.
