Class 4 Written
What can someone expect on an exam such as this?
I asked a freshly minted instructor at the local flying club and I got....geez I can't remember what was on the written. Great memory retention there, must have been all of 3 weeks since the written for him.

Putting money into aviation is like wiping before you poop....it just don't make sense!
Generally, you can expect questions on W+B (selecting max weight possible, moving weight between stations, etc), classes of airspace (altitudes and procedures), student types (actions and remedies), VOR and ADF questions (tracking, positions, etc.), performance charts, TC / TB interpretation, theory of flight (ex 10-13), human factors, flight test standards, licensing standards.
Hope that helps. Your class 1 SHOULD have a good set of sample questions that cover these.

It's been about 4 years since I wrote it, but this is what I remember:
- theory of flight**
- learning factors **
- dealing with different student personalities (in the FIG)
- CARs, esp. what does a PPL need, CPL, night and Class 4
- a bit about flight training units (check study and ref guide for CARs reference)
- Human factors as always
By far this is the easiest exam you will ever write from TC... not to say you shouldn't study, but i found it much easier than the PPL and miles easier than the CPL for sure! Good Luck.
Btw, contrary to what you will read on this forum, instructing is a great job and a lot of fun, and yes, there are employers out there who actually value the skills you develop while doing it. When I finally move on, I will miss it... i won't miss the pay, but I will miss the job.

Know your theory of flight, also rules of thumb and instruments. Not too much on airlaw. There are sample exams available. The 'C' man, (The forum won't let me list his name) puts out one, and I put out one. Checkout http://www.sabrejet.ca for details on mine.
Class 4 Written
First 10 or so from Flight Instructor Guide, Learning Factors.
Lots of theory of Flight. Five or 6 questions on VOR, know your TO and FROM pictures. A couple of weight and balance, no Meteorology, the last few on Medical Factors. Hope all goes well.
