What are the approximate hours for multi ifr training if one has ppl and other requirements 50 pod cross country and 20 hood actual. I know it depends on student but let's say approximate flying twice a week. Each flight school quoting varying hours.

Most schools make you go through a curriculum that ranges from 5-10 hours, plus briefing time. There is no specific requirement though... the guide just states that you have to have had demonstrated competency in all aspects of the exam, and a letter of recommendation. I did my entire multi engine rating including exam in 2.8 hours of flight time.

2.8 incl. Flight Test!! Thats awesome

421.46(2)(b) shows the requirements you need for a group 1 IFR. 40hrs instrument time, with 5hrs done on a twin

Whoops, I missed the IFR part.. I thought you were just asking about the Multi rating!

I am going to state the obvious, but if you want to save money (who doesn't),

Spend as much time as you can on the ground, preferably in the cockpit, rehearsing the procedures.

This is huge for the ME rating . When the engines are running you will be spending 6 dollars a minute ( or in pilot terms TWO beers a minute!). A lot of what you are demonstrating on the flight test is procedural so you can practice just sitting in a cold airplane. You should have everything down cold before the first flight.

As for 2.8 total time including the flight test, well since the flight test will take between .8 and 1.2 if done properly that leaves 2 hours or so of training. I suppose it is possible but I have never seen anybody do it. My students averaged around 6 hrs of training plus a ride done in 4 to 5 flights.

One issue is previous complex airplane time. If the only thing you have flown is Cessna 172 or equivalent then the first flight will be just learning how to fly the airplane with little or no ME training happening.

As for the ME IFR, typically the ME is done first and then the IFR. All the sim training should be done before getting in the airplane and then I would say the average would be around 20 hours in the airplane for a low time PPL,CPL. I did a few with around 10 hours in the airplane but they were all experienced pilots who were flying regularly and so flying the airplane was pretty automatic and most of their brain processing power could be used for the IFR procedures part.

Lol... it's pretty easy when you've already flown over 1000 hours as an instructor, have a friend teach you, are familiar with complex aircraft, and have 24 hour access to aircraft. The price of rental is temptation enough to get it done in as few flights as possible. I spent hour after hour chair-flying and memorizing the cockpit to make it work. It took time, but was probably the easiest flight test I've done.

5-7 hours for the multi

10 hrs sim ifr
10-13 hrs ifr in the plane

This would be a reasonable number i guess.

And if you read carefully, the mandatory 5 hours need not be in the multi itself. It just have to be in "aeroplanes"

Getting 15 hours from a qualified person.. thats where everyone has problems
