Is the plane owned by the PPL students?

The aircraft is owned by the aircraft maintenance organization. The potential students are employees of the AMO.

Then let me be among the first to rush in and disappoint you by saying they can’t train for a PPL in it - it isn’t permitted.

Sorry.

I believe the employees would have to be part owners of the company, or airplane for that to work. Could get creative with company shares?

No, that won't do either. They have to be owners of the plane in their own right as individuals. Company directorship or ownership won't cut it. If the AMO is prepared to sell them each a small share in the plane and re-register it in their (joint) names, that would do.

The cleanest way is for the AMO to apply for an FTUOC. They already have a company, a facility, an airplane, and an AE. The DOM can be the PRM with a simple SOMCM. A single Class 3 instructor can be the CFI as the sole instructor. That way they can train anybody for any rating a VFR C172 can do.

I don't think an FTU that is also an AMO can use the SOMCM.

And then they'd have to find a freelance instructor who wants to be a CFI and deal with all the TC headaches. It's going to cost a lot more than $60 per hour...

I agree it would be cool though,

Can the employees buy partner shares in the plane then train on it?

The FTUOC and the AMO are separate certificates. The SOMCM is issued to the FTU not the AMO. As for instructors, sadly due to COVID there are lots of laid off X Instructors available. Getting a FTUOC for a one person, one airplane flight school is not rocket science. In this case since most of the required elements are already in place, it is one option and has the advantage of not having to get into flight instructing grey areas.

I was just reading MSI 16 which says
1.1 ... The SOMCM concept is intended solely for operators who purchase maintenance services from Approved Maintenance Organizations (AMOs).
But it's not a hill I'm prepared to die on. If TC will accept it, that's great.

The easiest thing to do might be to lease the plane to a school, then have said school run a satellite operation out of Airdrie. Not sure which of the schools one would want to approach about that though. Most of the freelancers I know aren't planning on taking on any other projects at the moment, but the above arrangement might put a few class 4s to work. Depends on the schedule your trainees want to work to make it worth the school's while, but then technically you could find a few other students to make it more so.

Good idea. Has been done (other locals) so def viable but you need a Class 3 min at satellite schools.

Have to check with Airdrie airport as it's a private airport and requires prior permission to enter.

Also flight schools may not want to lease aircraft, having their own. But it would be stellar if they did and this could work out.
