Pearson Flyover

Post by avcraig »

Hi all,

Wanted to do a Pearson flyover in a 172 with a buddy sometime next week. For those of you that have done a flyover recently, what seems to be the best time do so and to not get denied due to busy airspace? I'm thinking of going down on a weekday.

Thanks!

You are not going to like it, but the short answer is it really depends of the mood of the local controller at the time of the request. Let’s be honest, it’s not hard for them to get you to overfly with x,y,z restrictions/clearances. It’s just a matter of being at the right place at the right time... And there is no way to know when is the right time.

Yup. Right place at the right time. I've done it twice, both after dark when things were pretty quiet. The first time I was listening to tower on my 2nd radio and was thinking about doing it. Someone else asked for a low pass so I asked to follow :)

.

Do it at the least busy time of the day/night.

More importantly, make sure your radio communication sounds like a pro... specifically on your initial radio contact.

I know someone who was flight training ~20 years ago and were doing a some night flying and the 119.4 guy asked them if they wanted to do a touch and go at YYZ and they did in a C-150. Try getting that now.

You start with a city tour with YTZ at night, look for aircraft going in and out of Pearson while city touring, then on your way back, when YTZ clears you, switch to terminal and ask them, or just skip the middle man and ask YYZ tower. It was pretty dead when I got to do it a few months ago. After 7-8 I found it pretty dead, but YMMV with traffic picking up.

Did a fly-over this past Sunday around noon. Did the city tour first, then asked City Tower permission for a flyover as she was about to switch me back over to Toronto Centre. Switched me over to YYZ Tower for the flyover. Kept at 2000' though so I suggest you ask for a Low and Over instead.

It all depends on how and what you ask for. This guy seems to quite well and has done a few low level photo sessions over YVR, and YYZ.
