AIFs while commuting/jumpseating

Post by hsilgnepilot »

Haven’t really realized until recently how much the AIFs in Canada have gone up since the beginning of covid. Been thinking, not sure if many of you guys have had the same thoughts about the AIFs while jumpseating but here’s an interesting perspective;

As a jumpseater using a reciprocal agreement for travel/commuting with another company, you’re almost always considered to be “a member of the crew” and standing by to assist if required for whatever the circumstance may be. Hence certain, but respectable restrictions such as dress code (uniform or business casual) and of course not being permitted to have a beer or two even if not in uniform. So using this example and from this perspective, how are these greedy airport authorities able to get away with charging all of us AIFs?

Curious as to all your guys thoughts on this;

Cheers!

Yeah my return commute went from $20 to almost $100. There's a class action lawsuit apparently that flight crews have been getting charged illegally for years. I don't have a link on it.

I've been working on this on and off for around 10 years. Unfortunately, we won't get anywhere.
A bit of background: The GTAA used to have an AIF contract with the airlines individually. The rest of the Canadian airports had a different contract with the airlines through ATAC (if I remember correctly). The GTAA contract explicitly excluded airline employees and the other contract had an exclusion for airline employees travelling on business. We interpreted this to include commuting. They interpreted this as DH's.

Eventually, the GTAA dangled a reduced landing fee in front of the airlines in exchange for renegotiating the AIF contract to include employees. First AC went along and then WJ did.

The class action won't go anywhere. Employees aren't parties to the contract and therefore have no standing to sue for breach of contract. Sad to say, but this crap is just going to continue unabated.

Thanks for your work, Bede. I hope it's not in vain and someday something happens.

Wait, you would pay fees in Canada even for crew jump-seating? Would you also pay while commuting on your own metal?
