USA jumpseating
does anybody know how jumpseat agreements work in the US? do you have to have a recriprocal jumpseat agreeement between the two companies or is it an open jumpseat agreement? which comapnies are participating in an open jumpseat agreement?
US Air
I work for PSA a US Airways company. We fly the CRJ 200 and 700.
Legally, or what our company allows is only companies listed in the FOM.
Your company must be in our book in order for you to jumpseat
on our airplane. If it is you may NOT sit in the flightdeck, but you may
have an empty seat in the back.
Now you can apply to our Cheif Pilot to have your company
on the list. But it is really up to the Captain on the flight. He/She
may or may not let you jumpseat.
I have taken dispacters and pilots from other airlines with no
problem. I usually give out the address so they can get their people
to contact our people etc....As for the record of who flew when....
It all goes in the garbage.
FIRST AIR is not allowed to Jumpseat on US Airways. They pissed
some people off at one time and that was that. So be good cause
it could really screw things up for others.

So....to get back to the orignal question.
Go straight through security. Show your badge and enjoy the attention.
Then look at the flight board (TV) to see what flight you want to get on.
Then go to the gate. Greater than 1 hour before is not really needed
cause the gate agents only have to be there for the 1 hour.
Tell them that you are a pilot at xyz airlines and that you would like
to jumpseat to ABC airport. They will give you a form to fill out and
ask them how the flight looks. If there is no chance for you to get on
then you can ask them to look for an alternative route. THese gate
agents can be bastards so it is hard for you to get them to do anything
for you. Just be really nice and just maybe they will help you out.
Choculate works wonders.
Hang around the gate. Do not leave. If you see the Crew walking to
the airplane stop the captain or f/o and tell them you are trying
to get to ABC. If the crew knows you are trying to get somewhere they
will do their best to get you on. The gate agent never tells the crew
that there is a jumpseater.
If you are lucky the gate agent will call your name and give you a seat.
Be the last on the airplane and the last off. Unless there is a fire and
then be the first off. Screw the rest.
Show the F/A your badge then go to the flightdeck and give the
paperwork you filled out earlier to the captain. You will also need to
show him/her your certificates, medical and badge. With that in order
you can take a seat whereever you are supposed to. IF you are the
last on then 9 times out the 10 the CPT will tell you to sit in FIrst Class.
SWEET.....
That is all. Around the 150th time this becomes very easy. It is a little
different when you are going from Canada to the US cause you have
to go to the ticket counter first to pay taxes get a boarding pass so
you can go through the US Security....If they have one in the CDN
airport.
I know people are going to want to work in the US....While it is easier
to get a job with a regional airline here, the quality of life sucks
compared to Canada. No culture, walmart customers, wifebeaters,
George Bush.....Stay in Canada, Life is too short to devote to
a career. Become a plummer or electrican and enjoy life.

So in the US they will accept Canadian ID and licenses? I am having a hard time accepting that if I walked up to a gate agent in BUF and handed over my Canadian credentials they would have no problem issuing a boarding pass. They have probably never even seen a license that big before!
Seriously though, can you even get through US security without a boarding card with Canadian airline credentials?
Also, you mentioned jumpseating out of Canada and having to pay the taxes and getting a boarding card first to make it through US immigration. I take it that you would just approach the check-in agent and request a jumpseat form and pay them the taxes? Or do you have to go to ticketing to take care of that?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

First, the gate agents only look at your badge. They do not see your certificates. They have no idea what they are looking at. I suppose they should but they don't. I have been given the wrong release but they sign beside "A" name cause they think it matched my badge. So now you know what you get for $8/hr. Same goes for security. Show them your ID and they will let you walk into the gate area without a boarding pass.So in the US they will accept Canadian ID and licenses? UNLESS this is an international flight....ie Canada to USA. Then you will most likely have to go to the ticket counter first and list for the flight and they will give you a Blank boarding pass so you can get through security and immigration and customs. Some airports you will have to do this and others you may not. Depends on the airport.
The TSA are not very bright people so they have no idea what an ID looks like. So you will not have any trouble going through security. Trust Me. Remember one of the greatest things about this job is being able to cut to the front of the line. Just DO IT>
It is the Captain and F/O that are the only ones that will see your certificates. WHen you go up front to say hello you give all that stuff i mentioned to them so they can see that you are properly rated etc...
Then they take the form you fillled out at the gate counter and throw it away. You sit and that is all. Be nice to the F/A's and you can get all sorts of nice treatment. Remember what i said about Choculate. Smarties work great too cause you can't get them here in the US. Stock up.
