Air Canada announced Wednesday it will suspend some flights to sunny destinations, from Jan. 24 to April 30, due to the pandemic.

On its website, the carrier says the suspended destinations include Antigua, Aruba, Samana, Curacao, Exuma, Grenada, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, Bermuda, Grand Cayman, Havana, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Martin/Sint Maarten and St. Kitts and Nevis.

Air Canada explains that to avoid Canadians being stranded abroad, it plans to "operate several one-way commercial flights from the affected destinations to bring people back to Canada."

The company says it will provide a full refund to travellers affected by the temporary suspension of these flights.

Air Canada is setting the record straight after an old press release inspired new, incorrect reports that it was about to suspend flights to Mexico and the Caribbean.

All the confusion stems from a press release from early last year stating that due to the pandemic, Air Canada would be suspending flights to Mexico and the Caribbean for 90 days starting January 31, 2021.

This AC Vacations Update is dated January 05, 2022:

TRAVEL ADVISORIES

TEMPORARY DESTINATION SUSPENSION
January 5, 2022
In light of the current pandemic context, Air Canada will be suspending some flights to Sun destinations from January 24 until April 30, 2022.

Suspended destinations include Antigua, Aruba, Samaná, Curaçao, Exuma, Grenada, Puerto Plata, Santo Domingo, Bermuda, Grand Cayman, Havana, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Martin/Sint Maarten, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

To help ensure that Canadians are not stranded abroad, Air Canada plans to operate a number of one-way commercial flights from affected destinations in order to return customers at the suspended destinations to Canada.

Any travellers affected by the temporary suspension of the above listed destinations will be issued a full refund. Our team will be contacting any impacted customers and processing refunds in order of departure date. Eligible customers will receive an invoice as confirmation of their refund once it has been issued.

Please note that existing travel restrictions, including providing proof of vaccination and of a negative COVID-19 test result before boarding an international flight bound for Canada, are still in effect. It is your responsibility to ensure that you - and any child travelling with you - have all the valid travel documents required for re-entry into Canada. Please visit the Government of Canada website for more details.

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed yet but over the last 2 years conspiracy theories have become the news just a few weeks early.
AC is rolling up lots of south flying, and consolidating flights in general. The loads are shot and people are getting trapped south when they asymptotically test hot for unicorn when they try to come home. Throw in trying to staff a full schedule with 20% of your pilots in isolation at any given time.

It would appear someone picked up the wrong press release.

PCR tests can test positive for up to 6 months after infection. People who leave the country are testing positive to come home because they didn’t know about a previous Omicron infection. It is why the UK stopped and why the US is only doing antigen tests. Antigen tests look for a live virus.

With an Omicron wave and PCR testing to come home. The government has set this up to punish people who aren’t actually sick. Notice they did not warn anyone that it might be a good idea to PCR test before leaving. They have done so deliberately to discourage travel. Unfortunately people don’t have the understanding of how Sock’s played this. All political. Now he isn’t the bad guy for shutting things down.

If you need to travel a mitigation strategy would be to get a PCR test 7 days prior to leaving Canada. If you test positive you quarantine for 5 days. Proof of a positive PCR test exempts you from the PCR entry test for 180 days.

By proof I mean your going to have to pay for it most likely. Most provinces are only providing a text or email which is not sufficient proof.
