Self-Adhesive Vinyl Flooring Review: Is It A Good Choice?

Post by atticusedwards »

Vinyl flooring is among the most versatile choices you can have. It comes with many advantages like lower costs and ease of installation. But there is one kind of vinyl floor that is even more affordable and easier to install: peel-and-stick tiles, also known as self-adhesive vinyl floor tiles.

What Is Self-Adhesive Vinyl Flooring?

Self-adhesive vinyl tiles are a thin material that features adhesive backing, making their installation quick and easy. There are many products on the market with a wide range of durability levels, patterns, and colors.

They are a low-maintenance choice for kids' rooms, hallways, kitchens, and bathrooms. Many loyal fans of this vinyl type are those who rent apartments. It is so easy to remove self-adhesive vinyl flooring when their rent ends that there is unlikely to be any problem with the subfloor.

That said, there are some downsides, too, mainly due to the processes and materials used to make those tiles.

Cost

Self-adhesive vinyl tiles typically don't cost much. Like other flooring materials, the prices listed are based on a square foot.

Some cheap products can be as cheap as a few cents per square foot, while higher-end tiles can cost you several dollars for the same area. You can get decent and attractive flooring around the one-dollar mark for each square foot.

This means you can expect the same cost as composition tiles - a vinyl plastic variation that is mixed with synthetic binders and fillers.

Maintenance

When damage happens to the point that you need to replace your self-adhesive flooring, you don't necessarily need professional assistance.

Modern products can be removed relatively. You just need to pry the tiles using a putty knife when they become damaged, gouged, or scratched.

But remember that while removal is easy, you also need a replacement for its underlayment or at least repairs for its subfloor.

If you contact professional services, they may refuse to install self-adhesive tiles. The reason is they can become loose, and you will need to call them for a repair. Some installers avoid this problem by using an additional adhesive, which is applied to the underlayment before the tiles are placed.

Design

Like other forms of vinyl floors, self-adhesive tiles always have a layer of vinyl first. Manufacturers usually add compounds to pure PVC to provide precise characteristics like sheen, hardness, flexibility, and color. Some products are added with fine minerals to make their texture look more natural.

Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) is a new type that has a flexible vinyl layer blended with a backing layer. This layer gives LVF its semi-rigid nature, while it features similar parts in standard vinyl tiles, including a wear layer and a print layer.

Laminate flooring is the main competitor to LVF. They use a click-lock mechanism to help secure planks into place.

Installation

One of the biggest advantages of vinyl flooring, in general, is its easy installation. But among all kinds of this material, self-adhesive is probably the easiest to install.

You can directly adhere most titles into the underlayment. Even a smooth subfloor works too.

The installation is not much more complicated than just peeling away and removing the paper backing, placing the tiles into their position, and pushing them down to create a bond between them and the underlayment. Manufacturers have added an adhesive layer and covered it with a protective backing.

To install self-adhesive vinyl flooring, you will need a clean and smooth underlayment - which is the hardest part of all. This step is crucial. If it becomes dusty, wet, or grainy, there is a high chance your tiles can't stick well into the underlayment.

You might not be able to spot the issue right away. But over time, these tiles may come loose when the underlayment is dirty and not smooth. You can add extra glues to strengthen the bonding and give it some more holding power, but they can only do so much.

Many people want to lay new adhesive tiles on top of some older vinyl flooring. This is a common practice often done with hardwood and laminate flooring too.

However, you must consult the recommendations of your flooring manufacturer. You usually need to determine the condition of your old floor to see whether it can support the newer tiles.

Other Properties Of Self-Adhesive Vinyl Flooring

Like other types of plastic, this material possesses many characteristics that make it a desirable choice for high-traffic areas.
  • Comfortable
Made from synthetic plastic PVC, it is comfortable underfoot and perfect for households if you have heavy foot traffic due to pets or kids.
  • Color
With multiple layers, vinyl tiles can retain their color and vibrancy for several years. Even if one or two layers have been worn away, their look doesn't degrade as fast as other cheap materials. This is true even when you constantly wash it with a vinyl floor mop.

This is a major plus point for high-traffic areas, such as mudrooms and entryways. It does fade, but like LVF, self-adhesive vinyl tiles can comfortably last for a decade with proper care and maintenance.

  • Noise
Besides the comfort it provides, self-adhesive vinyl flooring has a small degree of softness that can reduce noise caused by foot traffic. It absorbs some of this sound, especially high-end products that can do a great job enabling an almost soundless flooring for walking.
  • Water- And Stain-Resistant
Vinyl flooring can be found in a lot of areas with a high level of moisture, such as the bathroom and kitchen. As this material resists stains and cleans well, these places are generally not a problem for it. You can have peace of mind when using the best mop for Vinyl floors.

There are still limitations to how much moisture vinyl can withstand. When one tile or two has degraded too much, you can easily swap it out for a replacement.
  • Environmental Concerns
PVC products still have a controversial manufacturing process, and it may take centuries for them to decompose completely. Low-quality vinyl can give off some VOC (Volatile Organic Chemical) particles too.

Conclusion

Self-adhesive vinyl tiles don't have a complex installation process. They can also survive high-moisture environments without costing you an arm and a leg. However, they come with some downsides too.

Not that I can I see, I use all three, and the approach plate option on the Arinc Direct app is unreliable and useless as far as I can tell.
I just switched to Foreflight, not a huge fan yet but its ok. I still need the Arinc app for the oceanic stuff, and plotting charts

We use Airinc, JeppFD and Foreflight. I have never seen the ability to use Jepp on Airinc. As FD is going away I just had a demo of using Jepps on Foreflight. I had tried it a couple of years ago and it was not fun. They have fixed it and getting to Jepp charts in a table or on your map is easy now and I am about to move my subscription over. Still use Airinc, especially Oceanic but Foreflight is getting better with good WB, runway analysis and their dispatch function includes eAPIS, ETP plotting (haven't seen a plotting chart yet but Airinc's is pretty damn epic) and international planning (third party). I suspect in time we will migrate to the one platform. The only thing that I don't think you will ever see at Foreflight is a phone number you can call when things fall apart.

Boeing bought Jeppeson in 2000. Smooth move there. Boeing bought Foreflight. Now Foreflight will be the only app, once once JeppFD is ended, to display Jepp charts ect. Have been a Arinc user for quite some time, and their app is the Platinum standard by a long shot! Foreflight, which we have been simultaneously running in conjunction, is well, not there yet. Not even close.

We have found you need a serious internet connection to get the most out of Foreflight. With Arinc, as long as you loaded your trip prior to departure, your good to go.

Fortunately for us, we have a serious good internet globally. My issue is we need a OFP, ops manual approved, and although Arinc has that loaded for us, you cannot get it uploaded into Foreflight. So we are running both. Further, if audited upon arrival no way Foreflight will suffice.

Just did a major international trip, lots and lots of ocean, and Arinc was the way to go. Foreflight was the fluff.

Contacted Arinc sales, and they said no Jepps, but to write them and ask that they consider to allow to have your Jepp subscription displayed on other Apps, such as Arinc. If that was the case, we would only use Arinc.

Arinc also has FOS, a unbelievably powerful dispatch tool. As someone else said, Foreflight does not have a phone number to call, period. They are not in the business of trip support. So again, Arinc please.

Unfortunately Arinc got out of the international trip support, bummer. They will flight plan the whole thing, but you’ll need Universal or World Fuels (Colt) to do that. It makes it less than neat and tidy. World Fuels has a App, we gave it a go, but, nope. It needs to come a long way to catch even Foreflight.
