Satellite Internet

Post by overrun »

Anyone have satellite internet, what does it cost per month. I called one place and the initial fee was $1G plus $60 a month. This was for 2 way hi-speed.

Any help appreciated.

That sounds about right. Satellite isn't a great form of internet, but is faster than just dial-up alone. My understanding (when I looked into it a few years ago) was that with satellite, you still had to be on dial-up too. Downloads are by satellite, while uploads are through the dial-up. Of course, both up and down are required for the internet to work (when you type in a web address, or click on a link you are "uploading" your request :wink: ).

If you have any other form of internet available, use it instead. However if you are way out in the sticks, and need higher speed than just dial-up, it may be your only option.

A form of long range wireless might also be an option. There's some companys in the boonies that provide wireless internet. You just get a directional antenna, point it at there tower and away you go.

I actually did quite a bit of research into this in my other life…..

Three things you need to know first:

-Where are you going to be using it;
-Does it have to be mobile; or will it sit at a location for quite some time
-What are your bandwidth/latency/redundancy/ and cost requirements…

The options available are:

Microwave- there are a large number of solutions in this category; the most common/cheapest and simple will be one of the longer range versions of WIMAX; there are a number of companies starting to offer this service in some of the more “rural” areas in Canada… For example here on the west coast it is now being offered in some select areas; this is a line of site technology, and will yield something similar to a DSL line with the basic packages; however latency can be an issue in some circumstances, so if this is being used for VOIP you may get a slight delay; as far as I know you cannot get this service on and SLA/SLC… so expect similar redundancy to that of a traditional city line. As for cost slightly higher than traditional DSL/cable; some providers require you to buy the gear; others do not…. Usually you need a Yag ant/ mast/ modem approx $ 300 ish

IF there are no WIMAX providers, you can build your own bridge; this is definitely a more expensive option; but there are already backbones spread throughout in the north; from my understanding almost all locations in Canada can be reached with 2 or 3 repeaters. If you do this; quite often grants can be made available if you are willing to make some space in your pipe; not to mention some operations costs may be recouped. And since it is your own hardware, and you are probably plugged into a large backbone directly; redundancy/ latency/ and bandwidth can be as good/bad as you are willing to spend for.

NON Terrestrial:

There is a plethora of technologies and providers out there for sat based comm. At the bottom of the barrel are some of the consumer TV providers who have begun to offer internet. The older incarnations of these services required you to also carry a phone line, however some of the newer technologies do not. Cost is usually in the $80/M range for something similar to an ISDN line Latency is HUGE, so voip is probably out of the question; however for email etc, you will probably be ok. Redundancy you can forget about and bandwidth is garbage. Equipment is usually in the $600 range

Professional systems cover a large gap here, iv seen some as low as $1000 for gear up to well over $30K. Bandwidth/ Latency/ and Redundancy of all levels is available; from my understanding one of the better companies out there for North America is Hughes Spacecraft Ltd. http://www.HNS.com .

If you are looking for a more industrial solution I think that GlobComm offers VAR support. I also think that Telsat rents out space on some of their birds, but for 2 way communication I think you need some pretty big hardware; best to find a consulting firm…
