CAT 1 renewal - Colour blind

Post by ols500 »

Hello,

I have a CAT 1 Medical. I am colour blind. I passed the Farnsworth D-15 though and wondered if i need to retake the test at each medical renewal. I would email TC, but as you guys are aware they are not exactly the fastest in responding, if they respond at all...

Kind regards, Ollie

Nope, just tell your CAME that you have D15 results on file when they get to the colour blindness section of the medical exam. You'll see it coming, it's when they get out the goofy book that you can't see more than one or two numbers in those stupid dots...

Having said that, a CAME a few years back did mention that TC had started intimating that they (being CAMEs) should be conducting the Ishihara test on each renewal regardless of whether or not the applicant has results on file. So, don't be surprised if your CAME makes you do the ridiculous test, tells you that you really did fail spectacularly, and then just writes on the form that you're a D-15 case.

This same CAME also mentioned that he wouldn't be surprised if at some point TC makes people get their D-15 "renewed" at an eye doctor, because it's TC after all...

Thank you. I really hope TC don't make me repeat the D-15. Since the offical D-15 test, i have read the repeatability of the test result is very high and i have done online D-15s since and passed with no errors.

TC really should adopt a more modern approach to assesing colour vision, like in NZ and AUS where they use practical flight assessments.

What about just getting a Lantern Test done? Far easier and conclusive. All you need is to distinguish red, green and white.

There used to be a practical test, it's how I got my Cat 1. But then they go rid of it. Not sure why. My medical used to be Cat 1p, now it's just Cat 1. About 9 or 10 years ago, I got a letter from TC claiming that I needed to redo my color assessment and that a reassessment "should" be done every 5 years. My CAME told me to ignore it, and i haven't heard anything about it since.

Ridiculous. TC should of kept it. Would have been in line with NZ and AUS. The more countries who choose practicle assessments, the more others will follow. Its a shame though, progress will always be painfully slow. We are in the minority combined with the fact we are in an industry which doesn’t like change...
