Is it me or does 5000 tt, 3000pic seem alittle steep for a captain position on a saab, with those times you can be in the airlines with proper senority # and be captain.
3000tt I could see

Seem's pretty reasonable considering the strips and the environment they fly into.

Might seem reasonable, but if I had 5000 hrs, I wouldn't be going to Transwest anytime soon.

With 5000hrs you would be working and if not people would be calling you!

I can see steep reqs. as the Saab does go into some pretty ugly and short strips. But still.. TW give your heads a shake.. promote from within for cryin out loud!

Gr8Gazu, no disrespect my friend... but they've got a TON of people waiting to move up last I heard and they're trying to fill from outside and that just bugs me as I KNOW there are guys with the time to move up.

Lots of good guys in the planes and on the ground and the locals are a riot.. but for whatever reason management seems to forget whats going on sometimes.

I'm thinking that unless you're from the area or have ties to the company with 5k hours you're looking at some of the more desireable places, and remember.. the recession is over.

Blue skies,

gr8gazu,

You are right, 5000 hrs isn't much for a Saab skipper, but in today's hiring climate? Is that realistic? And like other posters have said, why not hire an FO from within? I'm sure a 4000 hr guy with 1000 hrs on type would be better suited than a 5000 hr guy with 0 time on type.

I agree with that point Bede. As someone who has weathered Recessions and bankruptcies, I have a different take than those who have yet to experience a real down turn. There seems to be no shortage of whiners with very high expectations these days.

Fond du lac was pretty ugly in the scheme of things. I also remember it doing some of the mine runs and charters. They aren't horrible but they're not great either.

I suggest to you apply for a job at TWA and down the road , after they piss you off as they did with many, we chat again...

By the way , expect 2 to 5 years stuck as a PA31 Cptn before you have any chance there to fly something better. and your $$$ will be 1/2 of a factory worker...you'll see

Never mentioned it in the original post but what is the pay for the saab captain anyway?

I was offered a job there a year ago and turned it down due to that fact, I was flying a navajo making just under 4k a month, transwest calls and says its 1400 a month plus mileage, I nearly shit my pants at that and said uhhhh no thanks I'm quite content.

Wonder what kinda wage for the saab, perhaps 30k hahahaha

From PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

STAY THE HELL AWAY.....

They have kids in PA making less than min wage... they have yet to change there pay scales to reflect the new min wage of SK. Oh and go there if you like having a cell phone and not being paid to be on call 24/7!

STAY AWAY!

It's there own stupid fault that they don't have anyone to upgrade. They hire there ramp helpers off the ramp into the Jetstream/Beech, then they upgrade them to Saab FO. How do they expect them to upgrade? If I were them, I would rethink that aspect of the operation.

When I was there, people still started out as Navajo/Twotter FO's then went on C185, or if they were good, directly left seat of the navajo. Then they would go FO on a 704 airplane and wait there turn for skipper.

How long does a person stay LH on the -31 before getting upgraded into a 704? And into which a/c?

Heard they were recently looking for a -31 capt. in stony rapids. What does everyone think of that position??

*chuckles*

The boys flying the 'hos LH when I was up that way had been on them for a while and depending on PIC time filled the jetstream positions when they came avail. (Once in a blue moon)

One to Two years maybe? Depends on how much movement and your times.

Best of luck if you Do go that way.

Stay safe,
Rowds
