Staycation
Given the economics of our times, both salaries and economy I'd be interested in the range of ideas that might exist within the AvCanada community for a Canadian staycation. I'm sure we all have our favorite spot(s), might even have multiple that are "seasonally" dependent lets put then down on paper for all to ponder.

Camping in tents at provincial parks. The camping is pretty civilized with washrooms and showers. The rates are fixed as it's government run and each park is unique so you can find something for everyone. You pay per site and not per person. Hiking, beaches, fishing etc, some really amazing provincial parks out there. Bonus points if you can pack your own firewood and save the 10 dollar a bag fee. IMO nothing beats a summer campfire with family/friends on a week long get away.
Its not glamorous, but everything glamorous will cost you the same as going south for all inclusive. Skiing out west, muskoka cottage to the north, lobster and golf out east. All these staycations are not cheap. Best value is camping in the summer as close to home as you like. Provincial parks are all over.

Tofino BC was pretty awesome when I visited a few years ago. The drive was amazing and Cathedral Grove (the giant cedars on the way) was neat. Probably more of a summertime thing though. Rental cars are getting very expensive now which hurts the budget.

Re: Staycation
I would have to agree with the post above that camping is probably one of the best staycations. As a kid growing up they were actually considered vacations in my household (immigrant family with not much money) and boy do I miss those days. Pitch a tent, eat yummy food and sit around the golden fire. With everything getting crazy expensive it's nice to see that the price of camping in the parks hasn't gone up a whole lot.
Re: Staycation
Tofino is also great to fly into (in summer), with spectacular scenery on the way. One hour flight vs 3 or 4 hour drive. Car rental is tricky, but I see a lot of people taking folding bikes in their planes.
You can also land on the beach at Vargas. It's a great experience, although I worry about getting stuck or having a mechanical issue. I usually just fly into the airport now, and it's a short walk to Long Beach, which is one of the best beaches in the world. You can camp beside your plane at long beach airport.

Sunshine Coast is great. Spent quite a bit of time there, working and playing. Probably do that again this spring, maybe summer.
Okanagan is a great place, but I haven't been there in almost 20 years now.

Re: Staycation
Sometimes the best 'staycation' is right at home. We often forget or don't even know what's in our own 50 mile radius sometimes.... tourists usually come to where you live too! Stay home, unplug, relax, vacation does not have to be busy all the time doing something! A quiet walk in the woods not far away is sometimes the best unwinding!

Can you please recommend some places or things to do? I want to explore that area.helicopterray wrote: ↑Sat Dec 24, 2022 3:24 pm Sunshine Coast is great. Spent quite a bit of time there, working and playing.
Re: Staycation
Camping in southern Ontario is not worth it. Over crowded, groomed sites and pricey.

Re: Staycation
Camping in a provincial site is probably one of the worst things you can do. It’s not even camping. Kids everywhere, some dood literally on top of you as your cooking your hotdog in boiling water as campfire bans are as frequent as the ranger telling you you all the things you can’t do. Quiet time. Cheap? Um no actually quite expensive really. Maybe everyone here is from Ontario but growing up in BC yeah fill your boots in Tofino with 10,000 other people from….Ontario.
Re: Staycation
Pukaskwa provincial park between TBay and Wawa. Gorgeous hiking, few crowds. If you're eager, charter a boat from the local FN and have them drop you off at the end of the trail. Hike back to your car at the trailhead.

It's great for camping, fishing, hiking. From Sechelt, to Pender Harbour, Half Moon Bay.

Canada is often more expensive than going abroad. Hotel prices have skyrocketed.
