Certified Owner Maintenance

Post by IWantA206 »

Hi There,

I am in the market for an single engine piston aircraft most likely a U206, Bonanza, or Cherokee 6 or other 6 place heavy hauler.

I would like to be able to do all of my own maintenance on this aircraft. I was reading an previous post about the ICS correspondence AME program.

Would it make sense to take this course then find an AME who would sign of my work on my aircraft while I build the required experience to write my AME exams? I am an entrepreneur and do not have the time to take a full time course.

Do you think this approach can work? If so what are the current requirements for an AME licence?

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

to get a licence you have to:

be 18
have 4 years expereince in maintenance (you won't receive any time credit if you do ICS, where college guys get 1.5 years off for going to school)
have completed basic training
fill up a maintenance log book
write the TC exams

see this link: http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/Regse ... htm#403_02

of all the requirements you would think being 18 years old is the easiest to meet but doing the ICS course is actually easier!
the down side of that is that you won't really get much out of the course that will prepare you to do work on your own. you will get the text books in the mail and some real boner exams that won't push your mental limits. so for getting the paperwork done ICS is perfect for a person with a day job, but you will really need to apprentice with someone to learn.

you have to work under an AMO to accumulate the 4 years of experience required for the M licence, and you have to fill out a log book of all the tasks you do and do enough of the tasks to satisfy a licencing inspector.
what you can probably do is get your plane under someone else's AMO and do your maintenance with someone with experience there and fill up the tasks and learn hands on. you would not likely get enough variety of tasks on one aircraft by itself, so it would work well to be around some other a/c too and pick up a sign off here and there.

but it is a great idea if you have your own plane to do as much as you can and learn as much as you can and why not chip away at your licence? and for that ICS works well.

good luck

You will need someone with experiance on that plane to help you, down on the road if you get license, sure do it your self. In 4 yrs you will pick most of it.
