Im just lookin to get my float rating. ive got nearly 110 hours but wanna build the rest on floats for my commercial. At the same time i dont wanna pay a fortune to rent out a float or get my float rating. So I dont really need someone with a instructor rating..just someone who can teach me to fly the damn thing.
In your case it may be more beneficial to have an instructor do your float rating. If you do it with someone other than an instructor you will not be able to count that as dual time towards the 35 hours required since private for your CPL. In the end you will have to pay for 35 hours so why not do your float rating with an instructor... two birds with one stone so to speak.

Of course it is not dual dual time if you take your sea plane rating with a pilot who does not have an instructors rating, but only has thousands of hours on sea planes.
They ( Transport Canada ) will issue the sea plane rating but it was not real dual if given by a pilot without an instructors rating.
Yeh, that makes perfect sense as you would be far better trained by some ninteen year old with a basic commercial and a class 4 that just got his / her sea plane rating issued...taught of course by another brand new flight instructor...
Yeh what the fu.k is wrong with me for even questioning such logical thinking as comes out of the hallowed halls of TC deep thinkers.
Jeeses H. Cherist what a fu.ked up bunch of morons you lucky Canadians have in charge of flight training in Ottawa.
Man I sometimes wonder how many of TC's rule makers it would take collectively to add up to an IQ over room temperature.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

I only meant it would be beneficial from a getting signed off stand point. Having said that I'm sure you could find some guy out there who is experienced in float flying and have an instructor rating to do your training. It will probably cost more but I'm sure Cat would agree with me that you pay for what you get when it comes to instructors.

Palmpilot, what I was trying to get across is the stupidity of not accepting dual for a sea plane rating as dual towards a commercial, just because the teacher did not hold a valid instructors rating.....
.....that pushes stupidity even beyond normal stupidity....
How do these idiots in TCCA in Ottawa manage to find their offices in the morning?

Sorry Cat I knew what you meant. Unfortunately only someone with an instructor rating can teach towards the issue of a license, ie 230 pilot with instructor rating. Compare that to a pilot with thousands of hours float experience and no instructor rating. A no brainer as to who should be able to teach.
Sure the dual time the non instructor gives you wont count toward the CPL. It is at most 5-10 hrs. If you were to do the training at a flying club, chances are the only thing the training will cost besides the rental of the plane, is a meal and a few beers.
Are students finishing up thier licenses with exactly 35hrs dual? or do they go over anyways?

Who cares about the dual. Count it towards your total build-up time. Fly floats, fly tail-dragger, fly upside down and inside out. The point is during this build-up period, fly as many different kinds of aircraft as possible. That will make that dual time that you CAN log far more beneficial.
