Hotel Rates for Commuters
Pretty simple question. Which hotels around YVR (and for the sake of having a good thread for this, other airports as well) are the best for the commuter? I will very soon be commuting to YVR from YYJ and have the travel covered. But I won't be there enough to make an apartment or 1200/month roach motel worth it. Looking for best commuter rates, shuttles if they have them, decent breakfast, etc, etc!
Re: Hotel Rates for Commuters
Lots of island guys just get an RV and park it at the airport as a crash pad. Actually the AC lot is full of guys from across the country, pilots and AME's that have RV crash pads in the parking lot. As for hotels, best place to check is if your company has any hotel deals for employees, otherwise I don't think there are any deals short of roach motels.

Ha. One of the Captain's suggested the Whyndam in Calgary has a decent rate if you call in. But can't seem to find that in YVR.
I just put all my cash into finally buying a house in Sidney, no money left for an RV but that's a great idea. Lol.

Just use your airlines discount at whatever their crew hotels are. Or Expedia.

Re: Hotel Rates for Commuters
If you're at AC the RV at the back of the lot is a great idea, if not, I'm pretty sure the security at templeton station parking won't like you sleeping there overnight but you will likely get away with it a few times if you're discreet. I know a couple who bought a 70's camper van off kijiji and just found places around to park for the night or stayed at campgrounds. For hotels even at staff rates you're still going to be spending 120-150 a night and you need to book them in advance to guarantee a room. there's a few air bnb's around Richmond that aren't complete garbage. Most are disgusting. Leaving a cheap car there really increases the radius of living possibilities.

So airline commuting has come to van life and playing cat and mouse with the Paul Blart's of parking lots

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Commuting is a choice, like it or not. Thousands of us do it and did it even when there wasn't a pilot shortage.
There's no shortage of pilot jobs right now. There's no valid reason you can't find a job somewhere in a location that pays enough to also live.

I've had to commute to YVR quite a bit, and I've found a few good options. The Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel is super convenient, right inside the airport, although it is a bit pricey. For something more budget-friendly, check out the Pacific Gateway Hotel. They offer a free shuttle to and from the airport and have a decent breakfast. Another solid choice is the Hampton Inn by Hilton Vancouver-Airport, which also offers a shuttle service and a good breakfast.AirDoan wrote: ↑Tue Apr 04, 2023 6:01 pm Pretty simple question. On a different note, if you ever find yourself traveling to Missouri, I've stayed at the Westgate Branson Woods Resort and had a fantastic experience. It's a bit different from the usual airport hotel but definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://www.westgateresorts.com/hotels/ ... ds-resort/

Re: Hotel Rates for Commuters
Fascinating articles about pilots living in RVs. It says more about the state of housing in this country than it does anything about pilot's life choices. YYZ/YVR are near the top of the world's most expensive cities, and Canadian salaries are near the bottom, so it's not surprising that some have chosen the RV life. Hell, in YVR it makes perfect sense due to the mild winters. Paying over half of your take home salary for rent is absurd, and it's somehow become normalized in Canada.
Never seen a country self-destruct so rapidly, but just goes to show that so-called "democracies" can be very readily subverted by interest groups to enact very undemocratic policies, like mass immigration, which immiserates the existing demos.
EDIT: Just because I know this forum is a troll haven, here's the links for the Century Initiative which is the lobby group that wants 100 million Canadians by 2100. They're ahead of schedule!

Re: Hotel Rates for Commuters
Sea Island has like the second largest homeless population in the Vancouver area. There’s RVs and little camps everywhere and I can’t help but wonder if that’s the crew for my next flight.

How is commuting not a choice? I chose not to commute, so I don’t.Admiral Benson wrote: ↑Thu Apr 06, 2023 11:58 pm Flying is the choice....commuting is not. Any commuter will understand this

I chose to be a pilot, I always choose to commuter due to life style and as and said cost. That said the cost in Toronto is NOT what keeps me in Thunder Bay, the life style and a very busy city keeps me away.
Quite frankly, if I could park a trailer in a parking lot as a crash pad I would in a heart beat.
Re: Hotel Rates for Commuters
Not really. You had to have a vax to fly in Canada. You don’t have to commute to fly in Canada.
They are both still choices (not a single person was forced to get vaccinated in Canada) but one is required if you choose to fly.. and one is not.
