Flying Helmet
just wondering if anyone knows of a place (web, army surplus ect) where i can get my hands on a new or used flying helmet. doesn't matter what colour as long as it doesn't have any cheesy maverick graphics or nicknames on it. looking for one of the standard USAF RCAF USN HGU models but i'll take whatever i can get.
cheers

You can get new helmets at flightsuits.com
They are a bit steep though.
And here is my two cents on surplus helmets. The military only ever surpluses something when it no longer meets design specifications. So do you really want a helmet that no longer meets design specifications protecting your noodle.

Thanks for the heads-up. I checked them out and they're pretty dam steep. See I’m not headed for the air show circuit or anything, I just need one because of company requirements. If I was in a position where I actually needed that head protection I wouldn’t be so frugal.
Cheers

I'd recommend something with a little more style. Guaranteed to make the ladies swoon:

Flightsuits won't sell to you unless you buy the helmet with a credit card that has a US billing adress. You have to go through TransAero, because apparently they have the rights for North America outside the US for all Gentex helmets.
TransAero is a bloody disaster when it comes to customer service. If you can find a way to buy from flightsuits, do it!

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.

When it comes to helmets, nothing replaces a new one. If you want one only for show, feel free to buy from Ebay and have it repainted, but if you NEED the protection, buy new. The are not cheap, but it is the only way one can garanty their structural integrity. Helmets have been designed to be used (read crash here) once, after thet, they loose their strenth and will not provide you with an acceptable level of protection.
Since you employer requires you to buy one, I will assume you fly chopers. If this is true, make sure you get a chopper helmet. They are a little heavier, but offer increased protection where you will bump your head should you ever be unfortunate to use it.
TransAero is a pain to deal with. Flightsuits does not have an export licence. You see, the US gov in its infinite wisdom considers a flight helmet as "munition" and one needs an export license to sell munition outside the USA. There is a way around it, when I purchased my helmet (from Flightsuit) I had it delivered to a US address and brought it back to Canada with me. the same law that imposes a export license on Flightsuit exempt Canadian citizens. Funny how thing works...
BTW, love the new helmet...
