Stony Rapids, need info please !
Somebody that is living or had live in Stony Rapids SK... can you share some info about the city, house for rent, food, grocery store...etc ?
Thank you
Thank you
Never ever give up --- up to a point, right?
Wow, you should do some homework. Bring lots of Jack Daniels and money for poker. The boys of Transwest and NDA should be able to relieve you of both. The JD will also help you see the beautiful women.
You shouldn't have to worry about rent, should be supplied. Groceries are expensive.
If you got a job up there good luck

If the company you are working for doesn't supply housing, there is none. The vacancy rate is zero. Two or three generations live in the same house. (convenient since there are only 2 or 3 last names if you know what I mean)
If they do supply it, TW's pilot res is decent enough. NDA has the "Hilton" and "The Palace". The Hilton as the name implies is pretty nice. The Palace is a shit hole.
You know, plywood floors, etc... There is also the water base, but I've never seen the inside of those.
Food is costy. NDA will ship stuff up from IGA in YPA for staff, TW probably does the same. For perishables, cheeze is like 8 bucks for a mouse size chunk. Pretty much everything is at least 3 times the price of down south, but if you plan ahead and order it by fax, you can get by easily.
There is one restaurant but the food is expensive cafeteria variety, and the hours are terrible. Better to eat at home. There is a Northern Store and one other (name escapes me). For entertainment there is, fishing, flying, and ...uh...well... bring a big box of jimmy hats.
Oh there's the fried chicken place in Black Lake, Chicken Chef I think... Have fun man, (not too much) just don't do anything I wouldn't do...

Stony Rapids
Stony Rapids is one swell gig if you can land it, my friend. I got my HSI and flip-flop radio checkout just south of there, and attempted a couple of touch and go's on the tight little airstrip on the city limits. A wee bit hairy for a Navajo that day.
The checkout pilot finally had a go, and thank god he was able to shoehorn the mighty 'ho into that clearing in the trees...after seeing the method I begged for a shot, but alas he had a busy day planned and couldn't go up again. Come to think of it, I am still waiting for a call-back on that one.....
Sauntering around town waiting for the sched ride home I happened across the Northern store, and lingered by the stuffed beavers as I made eyes at the portly clerk. She winked knowingly, and punched the buttons on that register with an energy that excites me to this day.
Ah, Stony. My heart still pines for thee.
Good times!

I was in and out of Stoney in the late '70's and I remember it as a place you either hated or had to put up with because the sheriff was alookin fer yu. If you get my drift.
Just remember, the natives come from a different culture and it may take a bit of getting used to but if you treat them with respect, they will treat you well.
If you think they smell, well they think we smell. different cultures.
But if you ever get caught out in the wilderness in ugly weather, better have a native with you. They will keep you alive. Smelly, but alive.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

If your going to be flying floats for NDA you should be fairly busy. I flew the Beaver up there last summer and was happy with the money and the time I did. Of course things can always be better, but beggers cant be choosers! The Palace is not as bad inside as it looks like from the outside. I lived there last year and survived and know lots of guys still up there. If your looking to get a foot in the door NDA can help you but dont expect a decent wage and be prepared to work long hours. Good Luck though its not so bad.
