Sunwing already has a yyc base. Westjet does not have a YUL base. I would be more worried if I was a Sunwing YUL based Pilot.

Westjets YYC base is wanted by many pilots. Upgrade times are 16 years to be off reserve!! I doubt Sunwing Yyc pilots will just keep their spot. Considering they got a 100% raise form 2019 and job security.....

Like all mergers in canadian aviation history, things always get interesting and some are happy and others are not. I will sit and watch, but things are undoubtedly gonna get somewhat messy.

I know a lot of Westjet pilots that would kill for a YUL base. We’ll see how things go

After it's all said and done, everyone both Westjet and Sunwing pilots will likely hold their base in YVR YYC YYZ YUL YWG. Any additional further staffing of those base will be via open bid vacancies that will be awarded by seniority with NO bumping current members out of base at the time of open vacancy. This is only the case if there net increase in base staffing.

Usually in mergers you’ll keep your seat and base. If you’re junior you’d have a crap schedule for a decade. Throw in your current bidding system and might not be bad.

Btw if WJ was ever going to go to a seniority based bidding system now would be the time. Just saying.

Why would it be any better of a time for seniority based scheduling, to punish SWG pilots?. The vast majority of WJ pilots don’t want a seniority based schedule system as was made clear in the recent surveys. I wish it would stop being dragged out all the time. We already have the seniority based full block reserve which is penalizing enough for junior CA/FO’s.

If it's true most Sunwing Capts have only been at the company for less than 10 years they will staff the reserve blocks being so JR. Most of the current Westjet pilots will be off reserve while most Sunwing Capts will take the reserve spots.

There has been quite a bit of hiring lately for WJ too, it’s only the bottom 15-17% that get reserve (short call or long call), so I would doubt that ALL the SWG pilots will be reserve. Western based SWG CA’s might be a different story, I’m not to knowledgeable about their western bases or tenure-I just know it’s been a painfully long time for WJ pilots to get CA seats.

I just meant that mostly all Sunwing captains will be on reserve for may years. The Westjet FOs with more YOS will keep jumping the Sunwing Captains. 16 years to be off reserve in Calgary! and Probably longer in Vancouver

During the Swoop integration bid lots of people lost their left seat. They did get to keep their current pay until their FO pay caught up (ironically FO pay was more for most of them becuase they were the lowest paid 737 captains in the world, Lynx has since taken that title).
I would assume therefore that Sunwing captains who cannot hold a left seat in their chosen base will keep their SWG captain pay rate frozen despite being back in the right seat.

There is a difference between ‘merger’ and ‘filling of positions’. WJ/SW is a merger. WJ/Swoop was already merged. Whether pilots got bumped was a function of filling of positions provisions of the CBA.

It is likely (but not certain) that a final merger result/award will include a ‘no bump/no flush’ provision. However, this is typically for implementation purposes, not lifetime protections (except for time limited fences). Thereafter the terms of the CBA will apply.

Some of this will be negotiated and what cannot be agreed upon will be arbitrated. There will be no extreme outcome. No lottery tickets.
