Forest Protection Limited Shadow Role

Post by frosty »

Saw Forest Protection Limited posting for Birddog and Shadow roles.
Cannot find what a shadow role is on google, can someone fill me in ?

I have above the requirements for shadow, but not enough for birddog, and have always thought about fire suppression as a career.

Tia.

Zero knowledge of their specific ops but could shadow mean “spotter/Aerial attack officer/HELLCO”?

From chatting with some folks there a while back..... (who have always been nice to chat with!) In a nutshell....everyone typically hangs out in YFC. They have many reload bases around the province. Shadow flys to the reload base nearest to the fire upon dispatch to get everything set up for when the tankers arrive to reload. If they are spraying, Shadow pilot may also work as bird dog/platform aircraft overhead the spray project.
Im sure theres more to it than that. Those Aerostars look like fast machines!
I doubt its a time building job, (not many hrs a season) just something to be aware of depending on your current experiemce/future goals.

Sounds interesting, thank you for this information. I have time on the 208, and time on a type similar to the aerostar. But I only have approx 1800 hours so by the sounds of it, it may take a while to get the 3000hrs as a shadow that is required for the birddog position.

Gonna be hard finding someone with 3000hrs to fly a C208 on a seasonal contract.
I’d apply anyway if I were you, 1800hrs and time on type might do the trick if the resume pile is real thin.

If they are using a 208 as a bird dog plane it's going to be extra hard. There's the single engine around a fire thing, but the main reason is likely the endurance of the 208. If you conserve fuel, depending on the fuel tanks and engine setup, you can squeeze 6 to 8 hours of flying out of it. 8 hours of flying circles is a loooooong time....

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship
