CANSO, N.S. -- Three people were killed and four injured early Thursday morning in a helicopter crash during a Canadian Forces search and rescue training exercise off Canso.
The air force said the CH-149 Cormorant helicopter from 413 Transport and Rescue Squadron ditched around 12:30 a.m.
Names of the victims and the injured were not released.
Military spokesman Capt. John Pulchny says the four injured personnel have been rescued, while a recovery effort continues for the bodies of the victims.
Pulchny says the cause of the crash is not immediately clear.
He adds that while weather conditions were not good in the area at the time of the crash, he did not know if severe weather may have played a part in the tragic mishap.
Military aircraft and Canadian Coast Guard vessels were on the scene. RCMP from Canso were also assisting in the recovery operation.

what he said. even PM us...actually PM me Desksgo won't be online for the next 2 days.
We are both looking for a certain friend that may be on that crew. You'll know who we are talking about because 2 years ago he was a "Golden Child" of when he "graduated" from flight training and went direct entry into SAR.
He always delivered a 'POW' when people met him and was 'WELL' liked.
Please...there is a small tight group of us looking for further info.
Thank you to you and all others who daily put thier lives on the line in order to safe the lives of others, my hat off to you.gryphon wrote:Hey guys,

Take my love
Take my land
Take me where I cannot stand
I don't care
I'm still free
You cannot take the sky from me

Thanks for checking in...The boys really shot into action this morning when I made my phone call, I am glad you are safe but realise that there is still a tragic loss here. My sincerest sympathies regarding the loss of your comrades. I wager by the nature of your work that you were a closely knit group. I too am heading home at the moment, so look me up if you are around and want to get together. Let me know if you need anything.
Dearest brother gryphon,
My sincerest sympathies regarding the loss of your comrades.
I had no choice but to call your home. Please forgive me but the Big-top boy's were very worried. I called back when I could speak properly to your family because their news that you were not involved in the accident overhelmed me.
Have a well deserved rest brother, I didn't think it was possible I could have had even more respect for you as a person and a professional in job that you do.
On a rare occasion we are all in 'town' now, if you come home please call us.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of this most recent tradagey, and to their fellow crewmembers. It is always heartbreaking to hear that someone won't be coming home to their loved ones at the end of the day.
Duane Brazil's family are in my thoughts today. When I read his name I thought that he would be related to another heilcopter pilot who perished in another Coast Guard accident 6 years ago, and today reading in the news learning that they were bothers. I remember Gary years ago when I worked in a small hotel in Labrador as a teenager and he would be there almost weekly for 3 years off and on when he worked for CHC. He was such a nice guy, always very friendly and curtious to us and I sure Duane was the same type of person as his bother was.
Spending most of my childhood around the guys who flew helicopters in Labrador is what fueled my passion for helicopters and is what encouraged me to start flying when I finished highshcool. I'm not flying now, but still in aviation and still look up when I hear a helicopter and think of so many friends that are around the country doing the one thing they love the most and of the friends I have lost.
