Re the bird-dog gear up..
My guess would be that he pulled the CB in flight to silence the gear warning horn..with the constant power reductions..the horn is always on..usually around 12" MP.
He selected gear down, never confirmed three green..and oh SH*T
The evidence left in the cockpit was a pulled CB and the gear handle in the down position..
