Lets open a can of worm here;
The problem I have with FSS is Liability. It all started back when TC was in charged and became worst after NavCan took over. I feel like they are trying to convinced me not to go flying. Here are individuals in an airconditionned room (which sometimes doesn't have any windows!!!) intrepreting weather for meinstead of providing me with the information needed to make my descision.
Last time I called FSS for weather, I only wanted to know what the radar looked like behind the storm that was right over my head. I had a quick 10nm reposition flight to do with my CJ and only needed a small window between storms to do it. But the FSS guys almost treated me like a retard because I wanted to go flying when there was a SIGMET for a line of TS between Chibougamau and Detroit. Never did he give me the information I needed. Ended up hanging up on him and called dispatch. Turns out the next cell was about 35-40nm behind this one and I had ample time for my quick flight.
I think they (NavCan, not the individuals) are concerned about facing legal actions that they simply recommend not yo go fly unless the Wx is severe clear. I even had a guy tell me VFR was not recommended because of 10sm+ vis and 5000 Ovc in the TAF...
Now, when I need the radar, I look at my blackberry.
