The Israelis have been extrordinarily patient in my opinion and have suffered a kill rate that is comparable to your quote every time a Palestinian detonates himself in a public market or bus.
As far as Hezbollah and civilians goes, what is they difference? If you kill 50 Hezbollah fighters, you have killed 50 civilians. They are not enlisted troops.
The UN peacekeepers is an unfortunate loss. Their service is still a wartime service though and you have to expect some deaths, intentional or not.

Tne greatest single loss of Canadian military personnel in peacetime ocurred on August 9th 1974. Syria shot down a CAF Buffalo operating with the UN with a surface to air missile while the aircraft was on approach to Damascus, with the loss of all nine crew. That's the reason August 9th has been chosen as Peacekeepers Day. It'll be interesting to compare the international reaction to the two events.

Screw it. Let the problem sort it's self out. There is no reason to put International soldiers in harms way for people who don't want peace.
All sides have made thier own bed, and now it's lights out. There is no way to solve this when children are taught to hate before they can walk.

I'm wondering at this time what Romeo Dallaire thinks of the chances of the UN intervening in some way between the two parties in this fighting. I believe his educated opinion in dealing with the New York offices of the UN would make for an interesting relpy. I would also expect to hear much dripping sarcasm from him also in that reply about the UN.

I know where you are coming from, but the problem is not with UN this time. With more than 2000 troops on the ground, they could certainly fill the vacuum in the southern portion. The UN has to act impartially, and that does not fit well with Israel and the US. The UN will never take over anti terrorist duties.
The reason that no one is shooting at us in Afghanistan, is that we maintain neutrality. We talk to every one. It will have to be the same in southern Lebanon.
And that Israel is not ready to accept. They want a different multinational force that will be partial to their cause. that will never happen, because all countries are stretched to the limit with other wars going on.
This time only diplomacy will be available. And that is why nothing is happaning right now. Really no one has an idea.

UN admits it has a videotape of soldiers' kidnap
Defense Minister Benjamin Ben-Eliezer yesterday announced that United Nations officials last Friday acknowledged the existence of a video tape with information on the kidnapping of three IDF soldiers by Hezbollah guerrillas at Har Dov on October 7, 2000. Israeli security sources suspect the tape has scenes recorded immediately after the abduction. In a strongly worded letter, the government demanded that the United Nations immediately transfer the tape to Israel.
Israeli officials had insisted for months that the cassette existed, but the UN adamantly rejected the claim. According to Ben-Eliezer, information about the existence of the tape was leaked from New York.
While it is still unclear what the recording contains, two pictures, showing UN tow trucks removing two vehicles used by the Hezbollah guerrillas during the kidnapping were shown last night on both Israeli television news channels.
The pictures were acquired by Shlomi Afrayat, owner of Topline in Kiryat Shmona, who has worked for months to make contact with the persons responsible for the recording. Afrayat is not in possession of the original tape.
"The scene was taped 18 hours after the abduction of the three soldiers", said Timor Goksel, spokesman for UNIFIL (UN interim force in Lebanon) peacekeepers in south Lebanon. "It contains footage of abandoned vehicles the Iran-backed Hezbollah guerrillas used in the attack," he added.
"Inside the vehicles, UN peacekeepers found UN insignia, uniforms and license plates along with weapons and explosives," Goksel said.
Addressing the Labor Party Central Committee at Beit Berl in Kfar Sava, Ben-Eliezer said that for months the Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs insisted that a video recording existed. As recently as Thursday, June 28, Ben-Eliezer told senior UN representative in the region, Terje Larsen, during their meeting that the tape existed. Larsen responded angrily insisting that there was no such tape. The meeting ended in a tense atmosphere.
"On Friday the same senior representative [Larsen] called me and to my amazement said 'there is a tape!' He was very apologetic. I told him 'I am asking that this tape be sent to us,'" Ben-Eliezer recounts.
"The tape may shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident [the abduction]," Ben-Eliezer said, referring to security service assessments that the same soldier also recorded scenes of the actual attack.
The UN position near the area of the attack is manned by members of the Indian battalion. UN officers and officials insisted that the soldiers at the position did not witness the attack because they took cover immediately after an anti-armor missile was fired at the IDF patrol vehicle. However, Israeli security officials suspect that the UN soldiers witnessed the attack and may have turned a blind eye to Hezbollah preparations to carry it out.
The Defense Minister adds that he sent a letter to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign affairs, in which he asks that the cassette be sent to Israel.
He also said he informed the families of the three soldiers of the existence of the tape. The families reacted with surprise and frustration and demanded that the UN hand over the tape to Israeli authorities.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said yesterday in Paris, where he is on an official state visit, that he hopes the UN will transfer the tape to Israel which he believes will shed light on the abduction of the three soldiers. He also said that he received no new information about the fate of the kidnapped Israelis in Germany.
Since the abduction of four Israelis (including the civilian Yohanan Tannenbaum), German mediators have been the sole conduit between Israel and the Hezbollah.
At the United Nations, diplomatic sources insisted that Annan was until recently unaware of the existence of the tape. Nonetheless, a senior official at the Middle East desk of the UN spokesman's office refused to comment on the request of Ben-Eliezer regarding the tape.
The official argued that "the Secretary General has not yet seen the Defense Minister's letter and therefore there is no comment nor will there be a comment until the Secretary General reads the letter."
Israeli sources in New York said "this is a very serious matter if the UN withheld information from Israel on this humanitarian matter."
However, they were also critical of what they viewed as haste by Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer, to announce the existence of his letter to the UN Secretary General.
"Acceptable procedure and polite behavior is to wait until a senior figure like Kofi Annan confirms, via authorized and official channels confirming that he indeed received the official communication," the sources said.
Diplomatic sources said yesterday at the UN that the issue of the tape is embarrassing for Kofi Annan. "For some time, and on all levels, the United Nations denied the existence of the tape, while Israel claimed that it existed," said a Western diplomat at the UN. "Now it appears that there is a tape and it is not clear what is on it."
However, in recent meeting with Israeli leaders, including Ariel Sharon, the secretary general has undeniably expressed genuine concern regarding the fate of the four Israelis kidnapped by Hezbollah, and promised to continue his efforts to get information regarding their condition and gain their release.
The condition of the soldiers is one of the details which Israeli security analysts hope to ascertain by close examination of the tape. Blood stains were found at the scene of the attack and in the destroyed IDF patrol car, suggesting that the three soldiers were injured during the raid. However, it is still uncertain what kind of injuries they sustained, and Hezbollah has refused to comment on their condition.

Ex Pat ------What you state may well be true, but either way the UN is what is termed "a morally bankrupt organization". Or put another way, what do you think the chances are that Belgium would be willing to play some "on-the-ground" part again for the UN in a multi-national force?

Appalled by the ongoing colonial military Israeli occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories [West Bank including Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip] declare and call for an immediate end to the ongoing Israeli systematic perpetration of racist crimes including war crimes, acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing [as defined in the statute of the ICC] including uprooting by military attack and the imposition of any and all restrictions and measures on the population to make life so difficult that the only option is to leave the area and state terrorism against the Palestinian people. Recognize that all of these methods are designed to ensure the continuation of an exclusively Jewish state with a Jewish majority and the expansion of its borders to gain more land driving out the indigenous Palestinian population.

Just a followup question. Why do people feel that building a wall around the occupied territories is apartheid....the O.Ts are not part of Israel, they are foreign soil, and the palestinians are not Israeli citizens. How is keeping some other country spereated from yours apartheid?

Before the UN goes "spouting-off" to anyone or country about what they should do or what should be organized worldwide against the Israel or anyone else, I'd suggest they clean-up the corruption within their own walls in New York and elsewhere. Koffi Annan doesn't have to go far either to instigate that clean-up........he can start with his own highly-placed UN son who is still under investigation, as are others. I said "morally bankrupt" and wasn't just referring to incidents like the 800,000 Rwandans that were murdered under their watch. I never heard of any reported, UN-inspired, international Conference on that happening either. Lastly, I'm not Jewish nor is anyone in my family, so don't perchance allow your thoughts to stray in a certain direction either. NO ONE"S hands are clean in this violence nor have they been since. Anyone could post almost anything here concerning this present issue and in the vast majority of cases they'd be correct in their views or reporting.
Israel is building a wall through the occupied territories. Don't forget the jewish only roads running through the occupied territories as well. “Another UN position of the Ghanaian battalion in the area of Marwahin in the western sector was also directly hit by one mortar round from the Hezbollah side last night. The round did not explode, and there were no casualties or material damage. Another 5 incidents of firing close to UN positions from the Israeli side were reported yesterday. Look’s to me that Hezbollah isn't "using civilians and UN workers for cover," as is commonly believed. The only purpose behind Hezbollah's actions is induce Israeli fire toward civilians and UN workers. The attacks Hezbollah does from these places have no real military strategic purpose. The attacks exist for the sole purpose of drawing Israeli fire, so that any resulting casualties can be trotted out for the Western and Arab press and used for propaganda purposes.
It's a media war more than anything else. Hezbollah knows it can't win on the ground, so they're trying to win in the press, and the way to do that is not by killing Israeli soldiers but by getting Israelis to fire back and hopefully cause some collateral damage.
"Human shields" isn't the right term. More like "Sacrificial targets"

The round did not explode, and there were no casualties or material damage. Another 5 incidents of firing close to UN positions from the Israeli side were reported yesterday. Hezbola (extremists) can't resist the temptation any more and fire off a few rockets into the hornets nest (BAD move).
Isreal now has an excuse to return fire... only they don't specifically target hezbolla outposts, but go on a mission to level every friggin building above ground within 100miles of the border. They take out the public airport, power plants, inihalate the road system, and completely destroy all infrastructure.
Not only this, but Isreal then bombs the lebanese military bases... eliminating the lebanese govts ability to even consider reining in hezbola.

What is the most surprising thig this week, is that Busch is hiding. He has no clue what to do, and according to some american diplomats, has no bargainning chips left. Ditto for the UK!

Niss, Have you been looking at any of the pictures from southern lebanon? Beirut?
I'm pretty sure there wasn't a hezbola outpost inthe middle of the friggin runway, or at the fuel depot, or for that matter in the middle of any major road/bridge.
Lets wait and see what the landscape will look like in the next week.... Somehow i think its going to be worse; who knows Maybe Isreal will move the tanks in so they can rebuild everything??
