Q400 FO to Captain Upgrade timeline

Hi all,

I’m starting at Porter soon on the Dash 8 and have around 1200 hours. I’m just curious how things are looking with Captain upgrades? Approximately how long can I expect to upgrade?

2-3 years most likely. ATPL and 500 hours on type is all you need, although you'll need to pass an upgrade interview if you have less than 2000TT. 500 hours on type could take you up to 2 years though, most FOs (YTZ) are only doing 200-300 hours at year at the moment.

1200 hr to the left seat - probably 2-3 years I would imagine.

They're desperate for Dash CAs at the moment. They're hiring DECs. The only thing that would hold you back is your qualifications, not seniority.

FOs are easy to find. CAs are harder to find because anyone who's competitive for DEC Dash can also just go to E2 land. The Dash CA spot has become really unattractive and so even the pipeline of upgrades the company expected to see isn't really panning out because FOs would rather just wait out their fleet lock and escape the dash.

Wow. Pretty cruisey. I was doing 600 hrs a year when I was at Porter. Not much flying going on or just over staffed with lost of RES?

Pretty fat on YTZ FO’s, plus a captain shortage so the schedule can only be stretched so far. In addition to that I’m pretty sure at some point last year they switched from targeting higher blocks for YTZ FO’s vs outstation FO’s (so outstation FO’s just weren’t flying a lot and made it harder to upgrade) to the opposite where now outstation blocks are higher. Looks like grey day galore for a fair amount of right seaters on the island at the moment.
