Plane rental hours claimed on taxes???
Has anyone been successful with claiming their block time rental costs on their taxes for education training while pursuing their CPL? How much did you get reimbursed? Has anyone claimed their plane rental costs from a flight school and been reimbursed by CRA? Thank you for your time.

According to the CRA you can only claim the TC minimums for the licence's as a "tax credit". Meaning if you owe CRA money now or in the future you can use the banked with CRA tax credit instead of paying the man. The key part is they don't pay you back for it in the form of a tax refund.
So the mins for PPL (25 duel 20 solo) & CPL (35 duel 30 solo) with a T2202 tax form issued from your flight school. The rough numbers work out to around a 1700 tax credit for PPL and a 2800 tax credit for CPL. I believe you can also claim the TC minimums for multi and instructor rating for tax credit as well with a T2202 tax form issued from your flight school.
So the answer is a NO. Block time is not a claimable expense when you do your taxes in Canada unfortunately
Hope that helps.

The school you go to also has to be registered as a Designated Learning Institution by the Province/Territory it is in. This is required for the school to be able to issue a T2202 Tax Form. Not all flight schools are because it can be a fairly lengthy process. Assuming they are though, and assuming the block time was for a PPL/CPL, you should be able to get a T2202 form from your flight school that you can use when filing your taxes to get the credits.

Ok, thanks so much for such a well written and informative answer. Very much appreciated.

Can you claim it for ATPL? (to reach the 250PIC hrs for example)local_yokel wrote: ↑Thu Feb 08, 2024 6:16 pm According to the CRA you can only claim the TC minimums for the licence's as a "tax credit". Like, if you paid for 50 extra hours PIC time to get ATPL mins? It would have to be done through a program offered by a Designated Learning Institution in order to get a T2202. So maybe if it's part of something like an IATPL course maybe. I don't imagine a flight school would issue you a T2202 just for block time/renting an aircraft though.

Re: Plane rental hours claimed on taxes???
I just finished my MEIFR with a company that's not registered as a designated educational institute. They therefore cannot issue a T2202.
From my research, I don't think I can claim that training, as they aren't a DEI and there's no T2202. A bit of a shame, as if I'd done the exact same training down the street (where I would have been waitlisted and received lower quality training mind you), I would have been able to.
Does anyone know of any loophole or if CRA gives any grace if I were to try and claim it anyway? I suspect I'm hooped but I suppose it's worth asking...

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) permits students to claim tuition fees for flight training that are necessary to obtain a licence or rating, up to the minimum flight training requirements set by Transport Canada Geometry Dash Lite
