No transponder across the border
Hello everyone, I have been trying to find a way to cross the border into the USA but they will not let me enter without a transponder. Normally I wouldn't go to the US but need to go just once to buy a set of floats, that are in the US, install them and fly back. I don't want to shell out $1500 for a transponder as I never fly in terminal areas and the lakes don't really care what i'm sqwauking. ...so I came up with an idea. My question is this: Would I be legal if I were to fly into the USA in formation with a transponder equiped aircraft and clear customs, then go on my way from there? Second question is do I need a transponder to cross back into Canada? My understanding is that the americans require it but Canada does not. Any controllers out there able to help out would be much appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like a plan. I'd call the FAA to question the rules though, don't ask a bunch of controllers. From my experience this would work as the US basically wants to know what targets are entering their airspace. If you're filed as a formation they know what both targets are and you won't get to see an F-15 up close. I don't think they care who's leaving their country.
We have no effective screening methods to make sure pilots are sane.
