AC Rouge 1693
Hi All…was witness to a very hard bounce and landing on RWY 32 today in CYOW (30Mar24). The aircraft hit and bounced at least 15’ back into the air and it looked they initiated a G/A and then levelled out and then came back down. Hope there were no injuries and the aircraft was OK. As I’m no Airbus pilot what is the protocol for a bounced landing, same as other transport aircraft? Thanks

Yes it is:-
- Re-establish the landing attitude if the bounce is not too bad.
- Go - around in case of a significant bounce.
I wasn’t there so can’t comment on the specifics of this flight.

Thanks Eric…I’ve seen a lot of firm landings in my day, but never a bounce and up again of that magnitude. cheers

An undercarriage absorbs unbelievable amount of weight during a bounce like that which reaches peak as a negative vertical velocity hits zero on an impact such as is described.
The lift to weight ratio then skyrockets (it’s all lift no weight for that second) at contact & even more lift is added to that if pitch likely increased pre-emptively pre impact in a negative vertical velocity. After impact all that new/free lift combines with upward force (same absorbed weight) coming off the suspension.

haha, based on my super sophisticated CYPM knowledge he is saying planes are designed to bounce by way of design.

If this touchdown also coincided with some extra thrust kicking in (like if some power was added to reduce a sink rate around flare) just as it bounces (still at flare AOA) … helps to “bounce” higher, but also ok position to flare again …lots of rwy left.a bounce and up again of that magnitude
Was fairly breeze day (20-30 mph) til later aft except the metar/anemometer record 2-3pm at both Ottawa airports show component reduced in that hour of approach .

Gear is toast. Plane is potentially written off as it is old.
Even my landings aren't that bad..
