Don't Jump on the Brakes Unless Really Necessary

Post by pelmet »

To avoid an accident....OK(which is really rare). To avoid a taxiway incursion.....not a good idea.

C-GENU, a WestJet Encore De Havilland DH8C-8-400, was operating as flight WEN3146 from
Fort McMurray Airport (CYMM), AB, to the Calgary International Airport (CYYC), AB. While taxiing
to the runway in CYMM, the flight crew braked abruptly to avoid a taxiway incursion. The cabin
crew were standing in the cabin completing the safety briefing when the braking occurred and one
of the cabin crew members fell and was injured. The flight crew taxied back to the gate and the
injured cabin crew member was taken to the hospital.

....from TSB.

The devil is in the (somewhat lacking) details. Were they trying to avoid causing a taxiway incursion, or were they trying to avoid an aircraft that had pulled in front of them?

There is nothing about another aircraft. I assume that they were advised to hold short of a taxiway. Just like a runway incursion.....frequently, there is no other aircraft nearby.

I never assume they contain the whole story because I've seen way too many that were poorly written and/or contained incorrect assumptions - usually made by the NavCanada person who wrote the original AOR. It should be noted that those AORs are usually made without ever following up with the crew / operator to get their take on it. I have attempted to have them corrected on many occasions - that in itself can be a highly frustrating exercise.
