Year one you get 26 vacations days as a controller. We work a 17/11 with a typical cycle being 6 on 4 off 6 on 4 off 5 on 3 off. So taking your middle 6 days off gets you 14 days of rest. You can't "buy" extra days of leave but there are a few ways to get extra leave. You can carry over up to 10 unused leave days from one year to the next. You can do day for days with other controllers, i will work Friday for you if you work Monday for me. You can do a day for day with yourself, you have to fill a staffing shortage on a normal day off and then you can take another normal working day off and they will backfill your position with overtime if needed. You can bank overtime hours, if you come in for a 8.5 hour overtime shift you can either take the money or take 17 hours (2 days) of leave. You can't always get the day you want off though. Another option if you wanted extended time off is the self funded leave program, you take a 20% pay cut for 5 years and then take the 6th year off with pay. You could also do this for shorter periods say 20% cut for 2.5 years and then take 6 months off. This is about all the PAID leave scenarios I can think of other than sick leave.
AS for your first 12 months, when training you can take a day or two here and there but personally I wouldn't take too many leave days when training. Once you're checked out fill your boots use it as much as you want till you're out of leave.

pokaroo, how do I find out more about the self funded leave fund? 5 years worked 6th off? Never heard about this before and want in. Does it exist in our VFR world also? Do you take the pay cut on OT as well or just your base salary? Thanks in advance.

You can also do self funded leave with 2 years at 66% salary, banking 1/3, and collecting 66% for doing nothing for 1 whole year!!! This is how it was explained to me, so I am assuming that you can do any variable you want within reason. Also, you do have to get managments ok, meaning that if you are in a specialty that is very short staffed, you may not be approved. Although I have heard that they can say no only so many times for this, so keep asking.
