Greetings all,
Was looking for some advice from Porter Pilots in the GTA, as I have no previous 705 experience and am therefore uncertain how scheduling/lifestyle works exactly.
Hypothetically, if someone had a (non-aviation related) second-job/side-hustle in the GTA that was flexible contract work, could one maintain said job on a part-time basis while flying the Q400 for Porter, or nah? More specifically for example if you were on reserve, could you hypothetically be working a side-hustle in downtown Toronto that you are able to leave immediately if called in? Or would you only suggest engaging in such work on your GDOs?
I'd imagine that there may be other Pilots in the same situation with the current economy/cost of living, but maybe I'm way off?
Many thanks in advance!

Re: Hypothetical Side-hustle Situation?
YTZ FOs have an incredible amount of time on their hands. This whole hypothetical situation is for sure possible. Minimum 2 hr callout for reserve which with traffic can sometimes make a need to not dilly dally. Once you can hold a block I think you can expect ~15 days off a month.
That being said, you have a responsibility to be rested and prepared for a call out so dont let this side hustle get in the way of your ability to show up to work ready/prepared for the pairing. Especially while you’re new and still trying to learn the operation.

When you’re in training put all of your time into training until your PPC is finished. Once you’re doing line indoc try to use your days off to study.
Line Indoc you don’t really have garunteed days off. The training planners can shuffle things around. Once your done line indoc your days off are yours. That’s when I would recommend you get your side hustle going, because YTZ FOs don’t fly much (it’s great hahah)
I had a long break between when I finished my PPC and when I started my line indoc. I used that break to work construction with my dad. I’m almost done line Indoc now, but i always make sure whenever I do work I take my uniform and luggage with me just incase I get called. Oh, and I make sure wherever I am working I can get to the airport in 2 hours.
