Kiev (dpa) - A Russian airliner crashed in Ukraine on Tuesday killing at least 30 of 170 persons on board, aviation officials said.
The Russian-manufactured Tu-154 went down in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region. Rescue teams at the crash site confirmed at least 30 persons died. There were no early reports of survivors.
"the accident was probably caused by severe air turbulence"
Does that mean low level windshear? But it sounds like it happened at altitude. If a wing or control surface separated I'm sure more than 30 would have perished.
Russian authorities are speculating that the airplane was struck by lightning while in flight, and that caused a fire onboard. The weather on the ground in the areas was apparantly so bad, it caused power outages and even cell phone disruptions on the ground. Sounds like extremely bad weather brought this bird down.

The Pulkovo Airlines Tupolev 154 jet disappeared from radar screens two minutes after sending a distress call around 2:30 p.m. local time, shortly after the flight entered Ukrainian airspace.
It was carrying about 160 passengers, including 45 children, and at least 10 crew members from the Black Sea resort of Anapa to St. Petersburg.
Russian officials said they don't believe anyone survived.
"Unfortunately, we believe that no one managed to survive," Russian Emergency Situations Ministry spokesperson Irina Andriyanova said in televised comments.
Burning debris from the plane was found near the Ukrainian city of Donetsk, about 640 kilometres east of Kiev.
Russian officials have ruled out terrorism.
"It was not a terrorist attack," said Leonid Belyayev, acting director of the Emergency Ministry.
There were conflicting reports about the circumstances of the crash. According to early reports, the crew tried to land the plane without releasing the landing gear because of a fire on board.
However, the Emergency Ministry said the plane fell from the sky after it ran into heavy turbulence, then burst into flames when it hit the ground.
Officials at the airport in Donetsk reported heavy thunder and lightning storms in the region at the time of the crash.
Rescue crews initially had a difficult time reaching the crash site, which is in an industrial region with many coal mines, Russian journalist Alexander Kleimenov told CBC Newsworld.
The airplane caused no damage or injuries on the ground when it crashed in a rural field outside a small village, Kleimenov said. However, rescue workers were concerned that fuel leaking from the jet could explode.

Russia was preparing to send a planeload of emergency workers to Donetsk, said Kleimenov.
3rd crash in region
Donetsk, in eastern Ukraine about 100 kilometres north of the Sea of Azov, is the country's fourth largest city and a popular summer vacation destination.
Pulkovo Airlines, among Russia's largest carriers, is based in St. Petersburg.
Tuesday's crash was the third major airline disaster in the region this year.
At least 124 people died July 9 when an Airbus A-310 operated by the Russian carrier S7 skidded off a runway and burst into flames in the Siberian city of Irkutsk.
On May 3, all 113 people aboard an Armenian Airlines flight were killed when their airplane crashed into the Black Sea while trying to land in rough weather in the Russian resort city of Sochi.
