anybody knows about Thompson Manitoba?

Post by jc.bank »

Hi everyone,
I just finished my training and i just got a job offer in Thompson Manitoba to work on the ramp and then after 12 to 18 months i can jump on a metro. I'm trying to gather as much information about Thompson before i make my final decision. If you've lived in Thompson please let me know what was your experience over there.

later.

Spent a month there one week...............and that was enough. I've seen it and I never have to go back and that is fine with me.

12,000-15,000 people, depending on whom you talk to. All the amenities of a larger centre, shoved way the hell in the middle of nowhere. Walmart, safeway, etc.,. Not the nicest city, can be pretty rough and dirty. If you can handle an urban reserve and being 6 hours from anything decent, you'll be fine.

Go, spend some time...if you don't like it, look for another job, and leave.
TH can be a great place, and it can be a real dump - it depends upon what you make of it. If you are expecting the amenities of a downtown YVR or YYZ, then you're going to be a *little* disappointed, but on the other hand, it's not quite the 3rd world reserve that others are painting it, either..
Safeway pretty much sells the same food that you can get down south, there's a Grapes and Boston Pizza & several watering holes. If you are more outdoors inclined: Snow Ski club (largest vertical drop in Manitoba ) WaterSki Club, more fishin' and Huntin' than you can shake a stick at, pretty good Sledding and Quadding, a group of guys meets every weekend in the summer for a bike ride, and there are a few hard-core runners. Play hockey at all? Lots of that, too.

Lastly, and the best selling point of the whole place, is the people that you'll work with. As you are just starting out, you'll (probably?)be at either Perimeter or Missinippi. Just about everyone who works at those two places is in the same boat as you - they want to put their time in, get good time and experience, and get out, and back to their friends and family down south. Funny thing is, once you do get out, the friends that you made in YTH will stay with you, while the others will fade a little by comparison.

Good Luck!

North Shore is right, N.Manitoba has been good to myself and many other fellow pilots over the years. You'll make some good friends and memories that will last a lifetime.
Have fun

Hey, Hey, Mystery Mountain has some good skiing for Manitoba standards, I always love when I get to come up there for a weekend of skiing, but I think Assessippi has a higher vertical...

i live in lynn lake, 300 kms northwest of thompson. we do all our shopping there, if they don't have parts or stuff, it is overnight from winnipeg. nice town, has everything encluding the cold weather testing at the airport at night in the winter. you see lots of new cars covered up in tarps as they drive them around for testing. it is hard to get a motel room there and appartments are pretty slim too.

Although not the nicest city, I don't think it deserves all the trash talk. In my first 5 years of flying, Thompson was the largest centre I lived in...so it could be a lot worse. It has everything you need, except accomodations can be a bit hard to find. I think you would be a fool to turn down the job, especiallly if you are just starting out.

You guys are loopy. There are a billion worse places to receive your industry break in. Like everything, it is what YOU make of it. Be prepared to think outside of your personal envelope a little bit and let things roll off your back.

ie.
Instead of going to bed with Mr. Pinky Winky in your hand, perhaps you should stay out and buy that heavyset girl (and her even heavier friend)another round of beers...you know, stuff like that.

I'd say the best role models you could have are any ex-Skyward, Thomson-based employees. Those cats made that place look like a paradise. Good show Skywarders.

Oh, and another thing - Give your head a shake!! A few years ago, there were guys on Avcanada pleading to get a job anywhere. Now here you come along humming and hawing about one that has been offered to you. WTF? If you had 2K hrs and 500Turbine MPIC, then ok, be a little picky...Also, there are at least two posters on here that I know for a fact work for Perimeter (no other Metro operators in TH.) why would you come on here pretty much shouting "I'm not really interested in working there!"??? If I were involved in hiring at the Green machine (I'm not) I'd be taking a look at all of the guys I'd offered a job to this last week, and taking a second hard look at anyone who said "I'll get back to you," as opposed to "when can I start?"

Sorry if I'm coming off a little hard here, after all, you are a newby, but, man, learn from the mistakes of others...

You are absolutely right man, i shouldn't and i'm not trying to be picky, not at all!! The reason i asked about Thompson is because i don't know much about the city and i'm trying to learn from other peoples experience. Yes there are a couple people on this forum that told me to stay out and a couple others welcomed me to the city, all of them have their reasons to love or hate the city, i respect their opinions and that's exactly what i'm looking for. No where i mentioned anything bad about Thompson or the companies that operate the in that city and i'm not going to start now, i've never been anywhere near the city so i'm not going to judge it. i'm just doing my research which is my responsibility, after all i'm the one who will have to make the final decision and if i was offered a job in any other city i'm not familiar with i would do the same. THAT'S THE TRUTH!!!

Stay away from the TI for sure....well unless you got the munchies at 2 am and need some pizza by the slice...as long as you don't look anybody in the eye they won't kill and eat you.

Definitely go to the Twilight Water Ski Club. It's late in the season, but you could still have a few tricks wired by winter, don't worry about the brown water on the Burntwood River, they say it's safe anyway.

Thompson is a good place for anyone in aviation to start. It's not likeyour going to get the snott stamped out of you every time you go out. There are good spots and not so good spots, but find me a place that doesnt have that problem. You have all the ammenities that you will need. Safeway and Save on Foods have almost the same prices as the city.
Blockbuster and Rogers are there. Wattering holes a plenty yes!!!! BP, Grapes, and Bankside are good. Club Fire and Ice for the ladies and dancing. Just remember its a northern minning town. If two guys wanna scrap just don't point and stare and you'll be just fine. There is local rif-raff there like I have never seen in a town like that, however it has cleaned up some since the are now taking sherry bottles in for deposit.

Its an outdoor mecca, HUnting, fishing, snowmachines, quads, skiing just to name a few.

The freinds and contacts that made there could not have occured any ware else!!!!! The freidships that I have there will never be broken. I still return there every year for a fishing trip.

6 to & hours away from the peg is not a hardship, your going to work for Perimitter sothey have a sced down every day and you will get bennies.

Go enjoy your self, have some fun, and make some out standing memories.

Good luck!!!!

P.M. me If you want some leads on places to live

I agree with everyone on here for their special reasons. I grew up a couple hours drive South from Thompson....and you take it for what it's worth. If it's the first few years of flying consider yourself lucky. There are very good times and very bad times to be had. You have to look at everything as a laugh and don't be afraid of anything. And if that doesn't work....resort to Plan B...Just Giv 'er.

I've been here 13 months now. It's not the best place, but as others have said, it could be much much worse. To be honest, YTH is much better than I was expecting before I left home.

Some of the best flying of my career to date occurred in northern Manitoba, and Thompson is as good as you make it. Take the time to go out and spend time with all the other guys who are in the same boat as you-you'll make a lot of great friends.

Yth has great cross-counrty sking for at least 5 monthes a year. The trails on the far side of the bridge are a great workout. The snow is light, dry, and fast.
