What's the deal with this exam. I know at least 3 people that wrote it and failed. Any ideas? Is TC making things difficult for us, or what!

The degree of dificulty of this exam is proportionately higher than the private due to the fact that you as a commercial pilot would be taking paying passengers and as a result, now face different legal liabilities.

A fair wack of the questions are based on accidents/ incidents/ violations faced by pilots over the last couple decades.

Got an AIP? Get a lot friendlier with it!

I second JC's recommendation to "get friendly" with your AIP.

Overall, I found this exam more difficult than the PPAER (obviously). I got the exact same mark that I got on the PPAER, with double the amount of studying. The Air Law section was very easy, as was the Met. I found the Gen Knowledge section to be the most difficult. I highly recommend you get the Study Guide, which sells for $20 and has over 500 questions in it.

I remember 2 obscure questions that I had:

1. Define "migratory birds."
2. What does ASDE stand for?

The AIP will give you all the info you need. You don't need to memorize the book, but at least read through it (except RAC 6-10, which is IFR).

If you study thoroughly, there is no reason why you cannot get a good mark.

Good luck!

What is the "average" mark anyway for this exam?

I have no idea what the average is. I got 87%, which is probably a typical mark. The pass is 60%.
