Ultralights... What am I getting myself into?

Post by BigQ »

Howdy,

I'm about to sign for a property that comes with a 1000ft grass strip and 2 ultralights included in the purchase price. Both have not flown in years, one possibly 15+. Word from an AME friend of the seller is the one that hasn't flown in 15 years is "trash", but the other one is a good condition (for it's history) 2-seater Challenger. Both have been stored on and off again inside, away from weather though there was a period of about max 2 years where the "better" one was outside. No inspections/maintenance in the past 5-7+ years for both.

What am I getting myself into? Is there a website/vibrant online community dedicated to Canadian ultralight owners that will provide guidance? I'm assuming it will cost me almost exactly the cost of a brand new one to restore?

https://www.challenger.ca/

Claude Roy is a well known Challenger guy in Canada. He is responsible for having the legislation created that allows crossing the US border in UL (legend has it anyway). He has flow his C2 from coast to coast and is an UL instructor as well.

Restoring them could cost you as much as a new one. Check out Ultralight.ca
